From the Classroom

Grade 1 News

We have had a terrific term in Grade 1! Here is a peek into what we have been up to.

Reading: We have been learning about comprehension strategies with our weekly big book. Each day we focus on a different strategy and this helps us to understand the text in greater detail. Students have improved their independent reading stamina and have enjoyed exploring a variety of books. Our phonics work continues to be a highlight and everyone looks forward to our Mesmer activities. Many students have received reading awards at assembly which has been wonderful to see. Thank you families, for supporting reading at home!

Writing: We have been concentrating on narrative writing, focusing on creating five-part stories. We chose characters, a setting and we had to have a problem to solve. The students are working on leaving spaces between words, using capital letters in the correct places and spelling words using the sounds they hear. Their writing skills are improving every day!

Maths: Students have really enjoyed mathematics this term. They look forward to completing a Blitzmaster challenge and have improved their addition and subtraction skills. We have learnt all about Australian coins and have even started exploring fractions. The students are becoming confident mathematicians!

Special Events: Last week was a busy one! We participated in Jump Rope for Heart and had a visit from the CFA. As part of our theme work and learning about people in our community, we welcomed Bailey Argus and Andrew Watt to Toolamba Primary School. These two firefighters showed us around the fire truck, we learnt all about their jobs and students even got to use the hose! This week, we enjoyed our first lesson at Jets Gymnastics on Tuesday. This session was certainly a highlight. Students had so much fun rotating around the different activities.

Grade 1 students have had an amazing term of learning and I am already looking forward to seeing the progress our class will make in Term 3. Check out the lovely photos below of us busy at work!
