VAGO Report -

Literacy & Numeracy Outcomes

The recently released report by the Auditor General examined whether the Department is improving literacy and numeracy achievement outcomes for all Victorian government school students.  A full copy of the report and subsequent findings is available here.  Whilst it is easy to be despondent about the findings and subsequent conclusions, the Department of Education Strategic Plan 2023 - 27 outlines the commitment to a great education for every child.

The key strategic reforms identified as part of the Department’s ambitious school reform agenda, focus on excellence in learning, strengthening wellbeing and engagement and improving learning and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal children.

The VAGO report highlights areas for improvement, offering valuable insights without needing to label its findings as harmful. Instead, its recommendations serve as a valuable tool for identifying concerns and guiding strategic improvements.  However, the challenge persists in ensuring that schools can prioritise their core mission while being equipped with the essential supports and resources to effectively meet the diverse needs of their students. This entails fostering an environment where educators can concentrate on educational delivery without undue administrative burdens, while also providing adequate resources for student support services, professional development, and infrastructure.
