Parking and safety around schools
Parking rules exist around schools to keep children safe.
What can you do to stay safe?
- Supervise your children in or near traffic
- Walk or cycle to school with your child
- Respect all road rules, parking signs and instructions from authorities
- Wait on the same side of the street as your child
- Always let your child out of the kerb side of the car.
It is illegal to stop/park/block driveways when picking up your children - think about the residents who may need to leave their home as well as emergency vehicles who might need to access this driveway. Blocking driveways is illegal and fines apply.
Please do not park on nature strips - this is illegal, and fines apply, as well as dangerous as it can block vision of other vehicles and pedestrians.
U-Turns are dangerous around the school precinct. Always try and avoid U-turns in a school precinct for the safety of our children. Look for an alternative, such as a nearby roundabout, or move further along, out of the busy school precinct, to make your U-Turn.
Parking Officers patrol and enforce parking restrictions around schools on a regular basis to ensure the safety of children and motorists. As part of their enforcement activity, officers take photos of offending vehicles to assist with reviews and prosecutions of infringements. Officers are trained to record this evidence while avoiding identifying children and parents around the vehicle wherever possible.
While conducting their duties, Parking Officers are exempt from parking road rules under Road Rule 307. Officers are legally able to record evidence of offending vehicles while they are stationary, which in some circumstances will include them parking contrary to law, for which they are permitted to do so.
