Carlsruhe Annexe /

Main Campus - Year 4

It sure has been a busy Term so far for the year 4 students. They continue to work on a variety of tasks both at Carlsruhe and at the main campus. In our Reading and Writing lessons, we have been working on persuasive texts. The students have been learning about the structural features, emotive language, descriptive reasons & arguments and the use of informative facts. It has been wonderful to see how the students have used their own voice in their writing to emphasise their opinions on a variety of topics.

In Mathematics, the year 4 students have been working on Subtraction problems and are learning about the different strategies that help them work through problem-solving tasks. Some of the strategies have been the jump strategy, subtract 10, subtract 100, friendly & fix, the balance strategy & place value vertical subtraction with regrouping.

Examples of subtraction strategies using place value.

Local Author visit

We had a lovely visit from Zoe Cottew who is the author of ‘Pip and Zoe’s Amazing Adventures’. This book is a collection of stories inspired by Zoe and her brother Pip’s childhood experiences when living in Indonesia. Zoe described to the students how she planned her writing using everyday life experiences. She demonstrated the use of basic drawings and sketches to help explain her ideas and real-life experiences. From these sketches her illustrator Cassia Witton created beautiful illustrations for her book. Zoe spoke about the editing and publishing process and described how long it takes to publish a book.

Some of the stories within the book ‘Pip and Zoe’s Amazing Adventures’ included: Sukey the Goose, Beating the Tide, A Squirrel’s Flight to Freedom and Jemima the Gibbon- which is about a gibbon that was part of the family when they helped to rehabilitate it in Indonesia. Jemima lived with them for 5 years and then was released to the wild.

Some sad news ☹

On Tuesday, we sadly said goodbye to Custard, one of our guinea pigs. Custard was born in Carlsruhe in 2017 and has been a huge part of so many students' lives during their Year 4 experience. He had a wonderful life, full of cuddles and care, and many families will fondly remember his weekend and holiday visits to their homes.

Carlsruhe Rotational Activities will be commencing soon.

4AI & 4SM will be commencing their Carlsruhe Rotational Activities on Thursday the 20th of June.

There will be six different activities each Thursday and the groups of about seven students will rotate through these activities each week. We will require at least seven parent helpers each Thursday afternoon from 1.30-2.30pm. The activities will include woodwork, cooking, gardening related activity, a science activity, quilling & craft.

A compass notification will be sent home soon specifying dates and activities.

A Reminder for all 4SM & 4AI to please wear appropriate clothing and to bring raincoats and gumboots for Carlsruhe.
