In addition to the Subway option that we offer each fortnight, we will be participating in a 2 week trial on Friday 7th June and Friday 21st June with a company called TK Tuckshop, who offer over 40 options, starting from just $5.50. All of their meals come in packs with a selection of one or more snacks and drinks. This trial will determine the lunch order options we offer for the remainder of the year. Download the app from one of the links below to view the full menu and place your order.
Last Friday, the staff participated in a Spiritual Wellbeing Day. We began the day by celebrating Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral, which is the principal church of our Melbourne Archdiocese. Fr Michael Buck led us in a celebration of the Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians and then took us on a very informative tour of the Cathedral. The staff participated in some team building activities and shared a meal together at lunch time.
Last Wednesday 22nd May was Jayden Nedeski’s birthday. At our school Mass which was offered up for the repose of Jayden’s soul and for his family, Fr Albert invited us to think of the day as Jayden’s second birthday in heaven with God. At the conclusion of Mass, students placed flowers at the base of our school cross and his Year 6 class mates placed them around his memorial seat.
In celebration of Jayden’s time with us, we spent the remainder of the day doing some things that he loved. This included the whole school taking part in Hot Wheels car races, eating Dinosaur Nuggets and getting to meet Spiderman.
Today saw Zaine, Eyueal, Chiemerie, Dominic, Luca, Dylan and Bilen travel to President’s Park to compete in the Divisional Cross Country competition. These seven students are to be commended for their efforts and the sterling way they represented St John’s.
Next week on Wednesday 5th June the Year 5s & 6s will be participating in the Winter interschool sports competition. The Netball teams will travel to Altona for their competition, while Soccer will take place at Alcock Reserve and Softball games will take place at Galvin Park. We wish the students all the best and hope they enjoy the day competing against teams from other local schools.
As part of their History Inquiry Unit, the students in Year 5 will be travelling to Sovereign Hill next week on Friday 7th June. Sovereign Hill is a replicated goldfields town complete with shops, schools, factories, gold diggings and an underground mine. This excursion will give the students an opportunity to be fully immersed in the life of an 1850’s Australian gold mining town. A reminder to families that the students need to be at school by 8:15 and that the bus returns at approximately 5:15. Students will need to either be collected or be booked into afterschool care, as children will not be permitted to walk home alone at this hour. If the bus is delayed due to traffic, parents will receive an Operoo notification.
As a continuation of the Year 1 Inquiry Unit about people in our community, the students were visited recently by members of the local Fire Brigade. CFA staff gave the Year 1s some fire safety tips and encouraged them to go home and chat with their families about creating a family fire safety plan.
Dealing with grief and loss can be very difficult to understand and work through. Parents can be faced with challenging or unexpected behaviours or questions. Below are links to several documents that may be of help, particularly to Jayden’s classmates from Year 6 and any of Jake’s friends in Year 2. As a school we will continue to keep Jayden’s parents Bill and Vesna and his brother Jake in our thoughts and prayers.
