Literacy & Numeracy

Mr Andrew Ericksen

At time of writing, NAPLAN results will soon be available to schools.  These adaptive tests are now all conducted online and encompass a student’s Numeracy & Literacy (Reading, Writing & Conventions of Language). These results help the college to plan and evaluate different activities, programs and interventions for students.  For our students in Year 7, this information helps establish a student’s needs in their first year of high school.  Whereas for Year 9, this information helps track a student’s academic growth and progress.

In Term 3, families will receive a report on their child’s NAPLAN achievement which will place them in one of four bands for each test:

Exceeding

Strong

Developing

Needs Additional Support

We ask that our families review this information, discuss it with their children & discuss strategies for improvement or extension.  Schools & families working together can make a positive impact on a student’s learning.

Some potential ways to support your child at home include:

  • Encouraging reading an engaging (and challenging) novel at least three times a week.
  • Discussing current affairs and reading the news.
  • Creative writing prompts and workshops.
  • Maths puzzles and online challenges

In Term 3, students in the Exceeding band may be offered opportunities to engage in the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP).  We encourage these Year 9 students to consider Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES) for Year 10 and beyond.  This year we have offered these students a range of optional excursions and opportunities to extend their learning experience.  Some events on the horizon include visits to the Victorian State Library, Maths Competitions and a visit from award-winning author, Will Kostakis.

For our students who record as Needs Additional Support in Reading & Numeracy, we will continue to offer assistance with our tutoring program.  With our Year 7s we will be using the Maths Mastery program & Corrective Reading and Decoding programs.  For our Year 9 students, they will continue to work with a teacher in small groups to offer personalised assistance.

While launched in 2007, NAPLAN continues to provide more refined information to schools and families as the test evolves.  In 2026, NAPLAN will be trialling new tests in Science, Information Technology and Communication and Civics & Citizenship for Year 10 students. When used in conjunction with some of our other testing platforms (Renaissance Reading, Essential Assessment and PAT-R and PAT-M Testing) our College aims to use testing data to assist all of our students.
