On June 3rd the Department of Education & Training hosted a Trade & Tech Career Expo at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre (MCEC). This expo aims to connect young women with careers in technology & trade industries. Greensborough College took a dozen students from Years 9-12 to learn more about these career pathways and emerging industries.
MCEC was a hive of activity on the day, with over 100 exhibitors from industries needing employees interested in aviation, welding and animation. There were also a range of demonstrations available to watch throughout the day including framing, bricklaying and concluding with demolition. As the job market changes, it is important for students to learn about industries which could offer viable pathways after schooling.
Here is what our students had to say:

On Tuesday the 3rd of June, some girls from the Years 9-12 went to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre for a Women in Trade expo. From aviation, to arts, to things like building, gardening and designing, it was all there. There were even some AFL and AFLW players giving speeches. We walked around in groups of 2-3 and looked at all the VCE subjects. After that, we stopped for lunch before hopping on the train back home. Overall, the day was exciting and futuristic. I’d rate this day 8/10.

On Tuesday the 3rd of June I went to a Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre with a group of girls. I enjoyed going there because it had some fun and some boring combined - but if I had to go again I would. It was very helpful and interesting, you could go to a Police Car and look inside and wear a vest. Then you could make a wooden chair, plus, there was some VR. My favourite was seeing a robot dog and the VCE Stand. They helped me understand what VCE was and told me what my job could be in the future.
