From The Team
Wow! What an awesome start to Term 3! The 5/6 cohort have had a very busy few weeks back at school with the Life Ed incursion, starting our Poetry literacy unit, and doing some fantastic learning around Data Representation and Interpretation in PONT. We also had a very busy week last week with our Winter Sport teams out at Division. Our two netball teams, girls' teeball team and boys' AFL team had great days out, playing as a team, working together and showing great sports-personship. Our 5/6 teaching team are well rested after our holiday break and are excited for another great term of learning and fun!

Literacy – Our New Approach
This term we’ve dived into our new Literacy program, designed to align with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0. Our new approach encompasses 6 main elements to ensure our 5/6’s are confident literacy legends:
Oral Language
Phonological Awareness
Phonics
Vocabulary
Fluency
Comprehension
Our new literacy blocks are now focusing on many key areas that are covered throughout the day:
Write2Read: our whole-school systematic synthetic phonics program that builds strong foundations in letter-sound knowledge and spelling patterns.
Reading: Using the new lesson structure, our 5/6 students have begun a text study on Tim Winton’s book Blueback. This involves reading chapters as a class throughout the week, analysing the text, and working to develop our comprehension and inferential skills.
Writing: Our new Writing lesson structure is dedicated to completing skills-based lessons, extending writing sessions where students get to build on this term's Writing project to create podcasts, and participating in structured handwriting or grammar lessons.
Building Fluency: Each day, students participate in a 10-minute fluency session designed to help them develop into more confident, expressive readers. Reading fluently involves reading aloud with accuracy, an appropriate pace, and natural expression, much like speaking or telling a story. Strong fluency skills significantly enhance a student’s ability to understand what they read. Our program focuses on four key components of fluency: accuracy, phrasing, rate, and expression. Recently, we have placed particular emphasis on accuracy, as reading words correctly is essential for clear and accurate comprehension of the text.
How can you support your child at home?
Encourage your child to approach reading with care and attention, taking the time to consider each challenging word thoughtfully. If they encounter a tough word, support them in using strategies such as re-reading for clarity and using their Write2Read word knowledge. Mistakes are a valuable part of the learning process and we want to help to build confidence and resilience!
What We Are Learning
What We Are Learning In Specialist Classes In Term 3
Cultural Studies
This term, our Year 5/6 students will be exploring the diverse and dynamic continent of Asia. Throughout the unit, students will develop their geographical knowledge by identifying key Asian countries and locating them on a map.
Students will focus on a variety of counties that they have chosen to learn more about.
Japan: Students will explore Japan’s geography, neighbouring countries, and major cities. They will learn about the cultural importance of origami and create their own paper artworks.
Singapore: Students will investigate Singapore’s rapid growth by creating a timeline of major events and historical milestones.
Iran: Students will explore elements of Persian art and create their own geometric tile patterns, inspired by traditional Islamic designs.
North Korea: Students will examine the Korean peninsula and create a simple fact chart comparing North and South Korea, identifying similarities and differences.
This engaging unit will build students’ global awareness, map skills, and intercultural understanding. We look forward to seeing the creativity, curiosity and critical thinking our students will bring to their learning.
Performing Arts
In Performing Arts this term, students will rehearse with classroom instruments in an ensemble setting and learn the bass and melody parts for Stand by Me. They will continue their aural training to include listening for descending as well as ascending intervals. They will also be learning/refreshing the following chord shapes on the ukulele: C, F, A minor G, E minor, D7, and will work towards changing between chords with fluency to perform songs.
Physical Education
This term in PE, students will revise and refine the skills used in the net/wall sports of tennis, badminton and volleyball. They will learn strategies and plays they can utilise across these three sports. Students will also practise the skills of basketball in preparation for Hoop Time.
Science
This term in Science, we will focus on the area of Physical Science. We will learn about light and how it behaves. We will conduct experiments to investigate how light is reflected and refracted. Students will investigate shadows.
Visual Arts
This term, students will create at least two pieces of art featuring birds. They will practise drawing using easily erased, simple shapes to help with proportion when sketching a realistic picture of a bird, before adding detail. Students will also design a mixed media art piece using a smeared painted background and sculpted bird using Magiclay. They will view, discuss and create art inspired by Loui Jover and Andy Warhol. To finish the term, students will explore facial proportions, colour meanings, and schemes when creating a Pop Art self-portrait.
Reminders
Homework: Students have been receiving their regular fortnightly homework and are expected to read 20 minutes on week-nights, and bring their diaries every Friday, along with the allocated Maths and Writing homework due each fortnight.
Parent-Teacher Interviews: On the 20th of August we are holding Parent-Teacher Interviews. If you are interested in meeting with your child’s teacher, you can book a time that suits you through Compass.

Cooking with Julie
On Tuesday the 29th of July 2025, the Year 5/6s made soup with Julie. 5/6H cut up the veggies and ripped the chicken, and then they made a base to the soup. Next, 5/6B cut some more veggies, and separated the chicken from the bones and added it to the soup. 5/6C then had their turn. They cut up even more veggies to add to the soup and spent time stirring the soup. Lots of other people did different jobs, so that the soup would be made quicker. The chicken soup looked very good.
At the end of each class, everyone helped to clean up. We washed the chopping boards, knives and forks by hand. The knives and forks were safe, not dangerous. After that some people ate it for lunch. The soup was delicious! Thank you to Julie for organising this special activity!

Girls' Teeball
On Wednesday the 30th of July, some of the girls in Year 5/6 and two 3/4s went to the Teeball Division competition. We all had a blast and won a game! We came 7th on the leader board. We went in Mr. Purdon’s, Alison’s and Natasha’s (Aaliyah’s mum) cars. We played against Lysterfield PS, St. Andrews College, Karoo PS and Heritage College.
The participants of the Scoresby Strikers were Aaliyah, Gracie, Alyssa, Hannah, Athena, Sophie, Savannah, Alyrah and Sienna. We learnt a few tips, which made us better teeball players. We lost three games and won one, but we did have a lot of fun and, as a bonus, we got to play on the playground.

Girls' Netball
On Monday the 28th of July, our Girls' Netball team had a chance to compete at Knox Regional Netball Centre in Division Netball. We played 7 games; the girls' team got 1 win. Everyone enjoyed playing with different people from different schools, and everyone liked testing how far they could go. Everyone's skills improved during the day. Everyone cheered for their team and we had a candy salad. At the end of the day, students had a great time trying new things and they enjoyed playing.

Mixed Netball
On Monday, at Division Netball, it was a tough day for the Mixed team as we didn't win at all. We still had so much fun even without winning. It was tough competition and everybody's skills improved as the day went on. The Mixed Netball team had Adalyn, Kai, Rohith, Beaux, James, Eason, Ruby, Shianne - and don’t forget our coaches, Jenny and Miss Symons. Overall we played 7 games.

Boys' AFL
On the 31st of July 2025, Bodhi, Hayden, Rohith, Kai, Rykar, Eason, Dante, Jaxon, Noah and Tommy went to Kings Park to play Division AFL footy against 8 other schools. We played in halves of 10 minutes each. After playing every school in our pool, we would face a team who was close to our ranking on the ladder. It was a close match against St Bernadette’s Primary School, with the final score going their way. We ended the day in 5th place. Even though we weren’t the best school there, we all still had fun trying our best in each position to win. It was a very exciting day for all the footy boys, and also Miss Crofts and the parent helpers! Thank you to Miss Symons for helping us enter Division!
