Out and about at Surfside

Mr Walsh (Principal) & Mrs Patterson (Assistant Principal)

We would like to thank our students, staff and school community for a wonderful term 2. There have been so many achievements and experiences to celebrate in and out of the classroom and it has been a long 11 week term so we know that everyone will be looking for a restful break.

It was lovely to celebrate this afternoon with our students and be entertained by our band and the State Schools Spectacular crew. They did an amazing job with 4 performances for our school community. A big thank you to Mr Morzinek and Mr Asher who put in a great amount of work with our band and academy and also Ms Moss, Ms Griffiths and Ms McCredden for their outstanding wor with our State Schools Spectacular crew and we look forward to seeing them perform at John Cain Arena in September.

We were lucky that the sun was shining but it was fantastic to see the students and staff keeping warm in their pyjamas, oodies and comfortable clothes. Thank you to the students who raised $480 that will go toward supporting children in foster care.

Surfside Masterchef 2025

Our Year 6 students have completed their kitchen and garden journey and it culminated with their Masterchef challenge. Students utilised indigineous ingredients such as pepperberry, lemon myrtle, saltbush, etc to develop a dish. These activities exemplified our school values of teamwork and achievement and it was evident that they have developed some amazing skills within the program and the judges were so impressed with the quality of the food. A big thank you to Clancey, Georgie and the classroom teachers for leading such a wonderful and innovative program for our students. We definitely know we wouldn't be able to support this program without the assistance of our Surfside community through fundraising and parent and carer volunteers - we thank you very mucvh. Our year 3's look forward to starting their kitchen and garden journey next term and have visited the kitchen this week learning some preliminary skills to prepare them for sessions ahead.

A big thank you to Amanda and Hugo from Gemaxis Jewellery who donated 5 amazing Surfside Mastershef pins. These were awarded to students who went above and beyond in the kitchen and garden program and exemplified our school values and were creative, innovative, caring and inclusive within the kitchen and repeatedly presented outstanding dishes that they should be very proud of. Congratulations to Eve, Tilly, Lorena, Cedar and Archer.

Foundation and Year 6 Buddies

Our year 6's always look forward to the day when they get to spend time with their special buddies in Foundation. They help them in the playground, they help them play and they help them to build new relationships. It is always a fantastic mentoring program for the year 6's and it is always a life long memory for our Foundation students. The Foundation and Year 6 students have been exploring STEAM activities together and the focus this week was robots so the year 6's mentored them on robotics skills with the spheros.

Boorai Kinder Visits

We were excited to welcome the kids from Boorai kinder over the last 2 weeks and our year 6's again helped to mentor and show the Boorai kids around. Here is a lovely message from the crew at Boorai:

Thank you so much for having us last Thursday, the Red Group children had such a great time in the garden and foundation playground with S13. The grade 6 children were fantastic with the kindergarten children and we really appreciated Brooke allowing them to come and have a play. We also had Sam join us as his little sister Immy is in our group so it was lovely for them to have time together in the school environment.

Book Week is coming in term 3...

Book week is only around the corner (week 5 of term 3 Monday 18th August-Friday 22nd August) and the theme for Book Week is 'Book an Adventure'. We will be conducting our 'Book Week parade on Friday 22nd August from 9.00am!'

The term 2 break provides an opportunity to get that outfit ready.

Children's Book Week turns 80 in 2025

Children’s Book Week is The CBCA’s key highlight national event of the year. This year’s celebration will run from Saturday 16 to Saturday 23 August.

The 2025 theme is Book an Adventure!

The feature artist for the year, Jess McGeachin, has brilliantly captured this adventurous spirit in his artwork, which features a whimsical map filled with imaginary characters. Jess’ illustration invites young readers to embark on fantastical journeys, inspiring them to travel through the worlds that books open up. As an award-winning Australian picture book illustrator, Jess’ work encourages children to imagine, explore, and create their own adventures.

2025 is also a milestone year for the CBCA as they celebrate 80 years of Children’s Book Week! For 8 decades, CBCA has been dedicated to inspiring young minds to journey through the countless worlds that books offer. Jess’ imaginative artwork reflects this mission perfectly, encouraging children to set off on adventures through time, lands, and imagination. The CBCA look forward to continuing this mission for the next 80 years and beyond!
