Year 3/4 - Newsletter

Dear Parents,
Despite the rain, our Years 3–6 Athletics Carnival was a fantastic day of fun, effort, and determination. It was wonderful to see so many ENPS students stepping up to challenge themselves and giving their best in a variety of events. The spirit of participation and encouragement was strong throughout the day, with students cheering each other on and celebrating each other's efforts.
Congratulations to all students for taking part and having a go, and a special well done to those who have progressed to the next stage of competition - we wish you the very best!
Year 3/4 Excursion - Indigenous Landscapes Tour, Thursday 26th June
Year 3/4 students and teachers will be participating in a guided walking tour of Eltham North and surrounds. We will discover how European settlement impacted the Indigenous people and Indigenous landscapes such as waterways, fauna, flora, and the effects today on modern Eltham. This event is now available on COMPASS. Don't forget if you want to use your SSB, you must have sent it to school in the portal and advised the office via the event if you wish to use it.
We are looking for parent helpers to attend the excursion. If you are interested, please contact your child's classroom teacher. Parent helpers are asked to arrive at their classroom 20 minutes prior to the tour starting time.
Please note, tour times have changed and are now as follows:
9:00am to 10:30am: 3/4A and 3/4F
11.10am to 12:40pm: 3/4B and 3/4D
2:00pm to 3:30pm: 3/4C and 3/4E
What's happened in year 3/4 this week?
English - Last week in Writing, students applied the factual recount strategies they’ve developed throughout Term 2 to plan and compose a recount of the Athletics Carnival. Following this we started our poetry unit, we began by creating an ‘I am’ poem about ourselves. We continued our reading comprehension strategy ‘Making Predictions’, and this week, introduced the strategy Making Inferences. We also investigated the suffix ‘y’ by looking into its meaning and brainstorming words that use it, for example, when added to ‘luck’ we have ‘lucky’.
Maths – In maths last week we learned how to find unknown values in numerical equations involving addition and subtraction. We looked at the commutative properties of addition using materials, diagrams and number lines. We used balance scales and informal units to create addition or subtraction number sentences showing equivalence, such as 7 + 8 = 6 + 9, and to find unknowns in equivalent number sentences, such as 6 + 8 = □ + 10.
This week in maths our focus shifted to length and perimeter. Students have been challenged to use their Additive Thinking skills developed this term to measure and compare the perimeter and lengths of shapes and spaces using formal and informal units.
Inquiry – ‘How did the arrival of the first fleet impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders?’
Over the past two weeks, we have investigated the nature and consequences of contact between the First Fleet and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Through discussions, research and reflective tasks, we explored how these early interactions were experienced differently by each group. We learned that while the arrival of the First Fleet marked the beginning of colonisation, it also led to significant disruption and loss for Indigenous communities. Through this exploration, we have gained a deeper understanding of how these events have had a lasting impact on the daily lives, culture, and connection to Country for many Indigenous Australians.
At Home Project - Students should have completed their research. It is now time to be preparing for their presentation and writing their cue cards to be ready to present their projects next week - week 9 (beginning Monday 16th June).
Homework - Homework this week continues to consist of:
- Minimum 4 nights reading with at least 80 minutes per week recorded in school diary (Book title, pages read, minutes read).
- Diary is to be brought to school each Friday signed by parents.
- At home project – Students should now be completing their presentations ready to present next week.
