As part of Refugee Week June 15th -25th, students explored the moving picture book Out by Angela May George, with illustrations by Owen Swan. This powerful story follows a young girl and her mother as they flee their homeland and seek safety in a new country. Told through the eyes of a child, Out offers a gentle yet poignant insight into the asylum seeker experience and the strength of the human spirit.

After listening to the story, students were invited to make their own paper boats by viewing an instructional video and reflected on what it means to leave home behind. They imagined themselves in the girl’s place, answering thoughtful prompts such as:

  • “What would you pack in your boat if you had to leave home?”
  • “What name would you give your boat, and why?”
  • “What message of hope would you offer someone starting a new life in a new country?”

This activity encouraged empathy, creativity, and understanding, reminding us all of the importance of welcoming diversity in our communities.
