Grade 1/2G
The students in Year 1/2 G have had a great term of learning and fun!
English
Reading
The class has continued their Reading sessions from the InitiaLit Program, where they have been focusing on increasing their knowledge of Tricky Words including "light", "brother", "says" and "many". They have learnt that two letters making one sound is a digraph, as in "ay" and "ow" and that three letters making one sound is a trigraph, such as "igh". They have been writing Super Sentences that include: a capital letter and a full stop, are about someone or something and need to make sense. We have also learnt that adjectives are words that describe nouns.
Writing
The class have read weekly texts and reflected on their own experiences in
relation to the storyline. These have included inventing their own toy, discussing an animal that they like and what they enjoyed when visiting a circus. Some responses included “seeing a clown”, “animals doing tricks” and “being in an outdoor tent”.
Each weekly text has specific vocabulary words defined with matching images to assist in the students’ comprehension of the story. Recently, the class retold The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by Ronda and David Armitage.
Mathematics
The class revisited Place Value at the start of the term, where they made numbers using bundling sticks, wrote them in words and numerals and partitioned them. They then used many "hands-on" materials in the Measurement Unit about Length, including Unifix Cubes, counters, dice and beads. They measured two items and compared the
length using the same informal unit of measurement. Students then moved into studying Addition, where they demonstrated a range of efficient strategies including "count on", "add 10", "doubles" and "near doubles" and were able to show these on number lines. They have started learning about Subtraction and counting back using tens frames, counters and Unifix Cubes to solve equations.
Religion
Students have learnt about important people in the Catholic Church community, including the Pope, the Archbishop and the Cardinals. They expressed particular interest in the fact that the Cardinals voted for the new Pope and were excited that this happened so recently with Pope Leo XIV!
Inquiry
1/2G have engaged in some messy and fun experiments lately!
Firstly, they made a Lava Lamp where they discovered that the bubbling
is the reaction of vinegar with the baking soda. The second experiment has been making Oobleck and realising that when we add force to this mixture of cornflour and water, it becomes a solid however, when we remove the force, it changes into a liquid form. Each experiment has included predictions and observations, and "hands-on" learning.
We are continuing with our engaging learning, and I hope that everyone has a safe and happy holiday in the next couple of weeks.
