Principals Report
As some of you may know Corey Jewel, College Principal has been appointed to the Acting SEIL in the Southwestern region for term 3. We congratulate him on his appointment and wish him the very best of luck in his new role. I am pleased and very proud to have been appointed to Acting Principal by our region and will be in the role for the duration of Corey’s absence. I have been acting Principal several times in my 10 years at Lalor Secondary college, and during my time as an Assistant Principal I have acquired a comprehensive understanding of the context of the college. I understand the importance of strong and considered leadership within the school community. I am confident that as a school we will continue towards the goals and directions set out by Corey and our school improvement team. I am keen to continue to strengthen our positive relationships within and beyond our college and understand that engaging our community involves fostering strong connections and collaboration between our school, our families and our wider community. A highly engaged school community is characterised by a sense of belonging, a shared purpose to provide the best learning opportunities for our students and a commitment for success for all our students. We are a great school, and I look forwards to LSC continuing its proud tradition of excellence.
Term three sees the beginning of semester two academically. Reports for semester one has been published on compass and are able to be viewed by parents. I encourage all parents to view these in preparation for the approaching Learning Conferences/Parent Teacher interviews on the 13th and 14th of August. There is a face-to-face onsite opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers on the Wednesday starting at 12 pm and concluding at 7 pm, this has been scheduled for Wednesday 13th of August. Alternatively on the 14th of August time has been set aside for online parent teacher conferences starting at 1 pm and concluding at 4. Appointments will need to be made via compass.
These are excellent opportunities to meet teachers as we plan together to maximize the best possible learning outcomes for your children. The partnership between school and home is a significant one in supporting and providing the optimal learning conditions for all students. Your input as carers and parents is valuable in informing teachers about your children and helps support that two-way channel of communication which serves to ensure positive approaches to learning and successful results. Moving towards the Learning Conferences opens an opportunity for you as parents and guardians to check in with your children to see how they are tracking and ensure they are keeping up to date with subject requirements. As always please don’t hesitate to contact relevant subject teachers or school teams if you have any queries or concerns. It is through our strong partnership that we can ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.
Finally, rehearsals and production planning for our Multi cultural Concert are well underway with the performance set for Friday 22 August. Tickets have been selling fast, with only a limited number remaining.
Information Evenings have also been scheduled to support students with their selections of subjects moving into VCE. The first of these, is set for 6 pm Tuesday the 6th of August, is for current year 10 students planning a pathway into VCE. The second on Thursday 7th August at 6 pm is for current year 9 students entering year 10.
Senior School
In the coming weeks year 11 and year 12 English teachers will be involved in a further full day professional learning session with educational consultant and past VCE Chief English assessor Ross Huggard. Ross has worked with our English staff over the past several years, supporting our English program. His many years of experience in assessing year 12 English examination papers and breadth of content knowledge of the VCE English Study Design has been most valuable in establishing the necessary rigour in course delivery to support our LSC students in achieving their best possible results. We are pleased to have Ross continuing to work with us throughout the year.
The College has once again purchased subscriptions for students completing units 3 and 4 to access Edrolo. This is an online platform which supports senior students completing VCE with the provision of access to quizes, exam questions, additional revision materials and video lessons provided by a range of educators on all key knowledge points as written in the current VCE subject study designs. These are incredibly useful as additions to the lessons provided here by our wonderful year 12 teachers, and past students who have excelled in their final years, have all spoken of the value that Edrolo provided in helping them acquire excellent VCE results. Login information was provided to students on Compass and via Teams. Please check in with your child to ensure they are using this exceptional resource and are not missing out on the extra resources provided.
Ms. Jade Charalambous, LSC Careers Counsellor, will soon begin meeting with our year 12 students, spending time holding individual appointments to support students in their planning to look towards career and post-secondary school options. For some students, the decisions surrounding future pathways can be difficult to make, and having conversations with your child at home can assist. These conversations had already commenced at the end of year 10, where subject counselling and course selections were undertaken to ensure University or TAFE pathways are supported by the choice of subject’s students have selected. Year 12 students attended Careers expo sessions last Thursday which were organized by Ms. Charalambous, where they further investigated their pathway options. Please feel free to contact her should you wish to make an appointment with your child.
