Year 4/5/6

Thinking in 3D – with a Delicious Twist!
Over the past fortnight, our 4/5/6 students have been exploring 3D shapes in a fun and practical way. As part of our Maths learning, we’ve been looking at the features of three-dimensional objects by building models, drawing them from different angles, and using squared and isometric paper. To make it exciting and meaningful, students were challenged to design their own takeaway food containers!
It’s been wonderful to see how creative and precise they’ve been, combining geometry with real-world problem solving. They also designed eye-catching logos for their takeaway shops, using visual design skills and persuasive thinking.
In English, we’ve continued working on narrative writing based on our class novel, Waves, a powerful story about people migrating to Australia by boat. This has led to some deep conversations and thoughtful writing as students reflect on ideas such as courage, hope and belonging.
The term was wrapped up with something tasty, a class cook-up! On Thursday, students made individual pizzas and sushi, ready to be packed into their specially designed takeaway containers. Their final products were not only visually appealing but incredibly tasty!
Mathematics – Geometry (Three-Dimensional Objects and Representations)
- MA2-SPG-01: Describes and represents the position of objects, and describes translations, reflections and rotations.
- MA2-SPG-02: Compares and describes features of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects.
- MA2-SPG-03: Builds and uses visualisation to describe and represent three-dimensional objects.
- MA3-SPG-01: Compares, creates and classifies three-dimensional objects using their key features.
- MA3-SPG-02: Constructs three-dimensional objects and draws representations of them from different views (top, front, side).
English – Narrative Writing and Responding to Literature
- EN2-CWT-01: Plans, creates and revises written texts for imaginative, informative and persuasive purposes, using language features and text structures appropriate to purpose and audience.
- EN2-RECOM-01: Comprehends and responds to a range of texts through discussion, reading and viewing.
- EN2-RECOM-02: Identifies how stories convey messages and reflect diverse perspectives and cultures (relevant to Waves and migration themes).
- EN3-CWT-01: Plans, creates and revises a range of written, visual and multimodal texts for imaginative, informative and persuasive purposes.
- EN3-RECOM-01: Analyses and responds to literature and other texts, discussing how themes and perspectives are represented.
- EN3-RECOM-02: Explains how texts can reflect personal and cultural experiences, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people from other cultures.
Visual Arts – Designing Logos (Creative Arts)
- CA2-VA-01 / CA3-VA-01: Makes artworks that represent subject matter and influences using a range of materials and techniques.
- CA2-VA-02 / CA3-VA-02: Explores the purpose and meaning of artworks in different contexts, including design and everyday visuals (e.g. logos).
