Year 9 News

It’s been a busy and active term for our Year 9 students, with plenty of sporting events keeping everyone on their toes. Whether on the field, court or track, students have been giving their best and representing our school with pride. With camp just around the corner, there’s even more to look forward to as we head into the final weeks of term!
Outdoor Ed Hiking Camp
During week 7, a class of year 9 outdoor education students went to Wilsons Prom to complete a series of hikes. The students came back to school with some stories, a few blisters and some sore legs!
“On the 4th of June, the Outdoor Ed class went to Wilsons Prom to do hiking. There was a select few students who did the overnight hike, which was roughly 9.6km to get to our camp for the night. It was fun having to set up tents and cook our dinner. We had the opportunity to hang out with mates at the beach after a long day of hiking. We had to wake up at 6am to watch the sunrise and explore the mountains. On the way back to join the main group, we went to a spot called ‘Normans point’ which had a great view!" -John
District Cross Country
During Week 7, we had four of our year 9 girls attend the regional cross-country event. They did a fantastic job, and we had three of our students finish in the top 15, therefore qualifying for the next round! The girls finished 10th, 12th and 15th. The girls also won the team award!
KAAP Hawthorn Visit
During Week 7, a handful of our Year 9 KAAP (Kurnai Aspiring Athletes Program) students attended a Hawthorn Football Club training session. Some of the students were lucky enough to get photos, signatures and meet/greet the players.
The students also got to hear from a previous Kurnai student Changkuoth Jiath (CJ) and learn a little bit about his journey to the AFL.
“On the 3rd of June, we headed up to the Hawthorn football club to watch the team train. It was inspiring watching the players at the highest level train. After the training, it was nice to meet CJ and take a group photo. He gave away his boots to two year 8 students. We also got to get photos and jumpers signed by many of the other players.” - Lavinia and Skylah
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
It has been fantastic to see students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. Keep up the great work!

Expectations:
As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are:
- Arriving at class on time
- Bringing all necessary equipment to class
- Wearing the correct uniform
Over the last few weeks, the Year 9 students have been struggling to wear the correct uniform. Just a reminder that students need to wear the correct shoes (closed-toe shoes). The following shoes are not a part of Kurnai’s clothing policy: Ugg boots, Crocs, Thongs, sandals, and steel cap boots. Students also need to ensure that they are wearing either white or blue jumpers underneath their uniform.
Thank you for your support in this space.
Year 9 Camp
The Year 9 camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne, run through the company DOXA. Students will have the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria Market, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the Eureka Skydeck.
This camp is fast approaching, and students are growing more excited! There will be one last information sheet regarding the changes to our transportation.
Just a reminder that if students misbehave while at camp, parents may be called to pick them up from Melbourne.
