Principal's Piece

Impact

As you may be aware, one of the College’s past Principals Miss Lorraine Hook passed away recently. Lorraine served at the College from 2004 – 2013 and was the fifth Principal at the College. Lorraine’s memorial was packed full of reflections from friends, family and colleagues who were blessed to be impacted by Lorrine.

Lorraine’s passing provided cause for those of us who knew and worked with her to stop and ponder her time at the College and the impact that she had on this school. Those refection’s led to the following being read out at her funeral:

Lorraine led Bayside with a steely determination and was passionate and persistent about our mandate to provide quality Christian education. She worked tirelessly to promote unity throughout every part of the College and helped to bring primary and secondary staff and students much closer together during her time as principal, leaving a lasting impact on students, staff and parents.

In her time as Principal, she oversaw the College through a time of growth, ensuring that all that was needed was available for teachers to teach and all students were learning and cared for. A significant part of this work was an extensive building program that included classrooms, a gymnasium, a primary hall and the Early Leary Centre. Lorraine was also instrumental in the purchase of what is now known as the North Campus. All of these facilities continue to serve the College community to this very day.

For those of us who are blessed to serve at the College today and who had the pleasure of knowing and working with Lorraine, we smile when we remember those red stiletto heels, and we share your joy in knowing that she is now with the Lord and Saviour she worked so hard to tell students about.

As the seventh Principal of Bayside Christian College, whose season is coming to its end. I have had cause, all be it briefly, to ponder what impact I may have had at the College. How will I be remembered? The answers to these questions are unclear, but I am guessing that it will not be my choice of shoes. Lorraine’s stilettoes are a tough act to follow. It may in the end depend on who you talk too.

The truth is that whether you are the Principal, staff member, student or a parent, we all make some form of impact on the College. It is also true, that that like those who came before us, we get to choose the impact that we have. We can choose how we are remembered and if when the time comes to step into a new season may prayer for each of us is that our impact leaves the college a little stronger and better.

The good news is that you have time. My encouragement is to think about how you can play your part, with your giftings, to build on the work of those who came before you. I acknowledge that it is a challenge, in the busyness of life, to think about contributing more. While it may seem difficult, even impossible, I think a great place to start are the small things. Things like sending an email of encouragement, ensuring that you acknowledge the work of others, or attending events are all steps in the right direction.

Be blessed and be a blessing.

Andrew Manning, Principal

This outstanding honour recognises the amazing work that Eira does in the primary school: enhancing learning for students, supporting and collaborating with teachers and improving her professional knowledge regarding education support.

Congratulations Eira!

Indonesian Immersion

At the end of Term Two, Bayside hosted 28 students from Penabur Christian Secondary School in Gading Serpong. Our students in Years 10 and 11 buddied with Penabur students and took them to their classes for English Immersion. It was an enriching experience for both schools, and we look forward to hosting them again next year.

I really enjoyed the Immersion experience. My buddy had exceptional English and was overall a very nice person to interact with and get to know. Their academic system is a lot stricter than ours, which was interesting to learn about; their school hours are longer, and they have higher passing grades. - Luke Faure

I enjoyed my buddy being here. He was pretty cool, and I got to hear what a day in the life of Indonesia looked like - Will Gasgard

It was truly an honour to meet Calvin and his friends; learning about their culture, interests, and daily life was an amazing experience. I'm grateful for this opportunity and hope we get to do something like this again in the future - Justin Keel
