Year 7 & 8 News

During Term 2 the Year 7 and 8 cohorts have continued to impress us with their school uniform, progress reports and kindness to others.

School uniform has been a large focus and area to celebrate for the year levels as we head into winter. Students who have consistently came to school in the correct uniform have been celebrated with positive acknowledgements and posi-slips to continue to promote positive choices relating to uniform. As a reminder for uniform any additional layer of uniform a student wears for warmth needs to match the colour of their top half. For example, if in PE uniform a navy additional layer underneath is required and if in traditional uniform with a white t-shirt a white additional layer underneath is required. This message was shown to all students at the start of term and has been received well which we aim to continue as the year progresses.

Progress reports have been another area to recognise for both year levels. Our 6-week cycle of progress reports came out last week, students who received an average of 4.0 or higher, or showed growth of 0.5 or higher have been recognised with a hot chip lunch this week. In Year 7 we had just under 70% of students achieve this and being rewarded for their efforts and in the Year 8’s we had half of the year level be recognised for this effort. It is fantastic to see the resilience of learners as we get into the middle of the year.

This term we have introduced Kindness Buckets for the Year 7 and 8 classes. The aim of these buckets is to encourage students to show acts of kindness throughout the day to help others. When a student is noticed demonstrating this towards someone or their environment the teacher will give them a kindness ticket which is cashed in at the year level office for a counter in their classes tub. The class with the most counters at the end of term can celebrate in a way of their choosing. These tubs are always on display in our office window so students can track how their class is progressing and promote kindness in everyone.

Finally, I would like to recognise the work our Learning to Learn teachers are doing in those sessions this term. Both Year 7 and 8 have been completing bullying units. In the unit are lessons around what bullying looks like, the impact it has one people, laws around bullying, how to help someone feeling bullied and resources that we can implement as a school to assist. The hope is that by the end of term it empowers students to know the signs of bullying and the next steps they can take to seek support.

Moving towards the end of this term and into term 3 events for students to look forward to are Basketball and Netball interschool sports, our school carnival ran by the senior school/student leadership and mobile tech school visits.
