Assistant Principals Report

Semester Reports

As semester one comes to a close, our usual semester reports will be available, providing an overview of each student’s learning progress for the semester. Reports will be printed in hard copy and sent home with each student on Wednesday 19th June, and will also be published digitally to Compass. Reports provide a great opportunity to have a conversation with your child about their learning. As usual, students receive an overall comment from each subject teacher, regarding learning achievements made and areas for improvement.

Each student across Years 7-12 also receives an overall S (satisfactory) or N (not satisfactory) for each subject.

To achieve an S, students are expected to have:

· Exemplary attendance, and

· Completed all required coursework tasks, and

· Completed and submitted all Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) or SACs (VCE only) for the subject, to a satisfactory standard.

The Satisfactory subject result provides students and parents /guardians with important information regarding whether your child has met the minimum requirements and can be said to have reached a satisfactory understanding of the learning outcomes. Importantly, your child does not need to be at the ‘expected’ standard for the year level at which they are enrolled in order to achieve an S – we are looking for their learning growth regardless of starting point, demonstration of a sufficient level of effort and pride in learning, along with completion of key learning activities and assessment tasks which cater for different abilities.

If you have any queries or concerns about your child’s report please contact the relevant Year Level Coordinator.

Careers Expo and Subject Selection

Term three will bring our annual Careers Expo and Information Evening, which is taking place on Wednesday 24th July, at the Maffra Memorial Hall.

All students and their parents/guardians in Years 8, 9 and 10 are expected to attend, as there will be important information provided regarding 2025 academic programs. Students in Years 11 and 12 are welcome – there will be a number of local employers, apprenticeship and traineeship providers, community groups, universities and TAFEs present, along with Maffra Secondary College subject teachers.

Important information sessions will run in the supper room at the following times, for the following year levels:

Students in Year 8 – 6pm

Students in Year 9 – 6:30pm

Students in Year 10 – 7pm

Following the Careers Expo, Year 8 students will be expected to enter their elective subject choices online. A letter will be given to students at school with a unique webcode allowing them to enter their subjects.

Year 9 and 10 students will each have a ‘subject selection day’ where each student and parent/guardian will have a meeting with our careers counselling team. These will take place in the Maffra Secondary College library and can be booked online using Compass.

Year 9 subject selection day is Tuesday 30th July, and Year 10 subject selection day is Friday 2nd August. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Careers Expo. It is always a great night.

AWARD-WINNING YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM LIVE4LIFE LAUNCHES IN WELLINGTON

The award-winning Live4Life program will be launched in Wellington next week. This groundbreaking, peer-led, evidence-based, community impact model spans both suicide prevention and mental health/wellbeing education. It is the only program of its kind designed specifically for rural and regional areas.

Live4Life brings together rural and regional communities to deliver evidence-based mental health education in schools and the wider community, create local partnerships to lead conversations which reduce stigma around mental health, and also promote young leaders as Mental Health Ambassadors.

The day will include our 2024 Crew Members presenting to their peers and announcing the annual theme, special guest speakers, live performances and fun activities promoting mental health awareness.

Approximately 600 hundred Year 8 students from across the Wellington Shire (Catholic College Sale, Sale Secondary College, Gippsland Grammar, Sale Specialist School, Yarram Secondary College and Maffra Secondary College) will attend the day, alongside representatives from local youth organisations and support networks in Wellington related to mental health and wellbeing.

I would personally like to congratulate the Year 9 Maffra Secondary College 2024 Crew representatives – Brodie Chilton, Bella Clohsey, Gracie Barwick, Janella Bullo and Monique Leighton on their successful applications to become CREW members. This will be an excellent leadership opportunity for our CREW members, which our Year 8 students will have also have in 2025.

Stay tuned for more news after the Launch!
