STEM/Science
During Reconciliation Week, with the theme "Now More Than Ever," students explored the contributions of Indigenous Australians as the first scientists. They engaged in various activities highlighting traditional knowledge and practices in fields such as astronomy, ecology, and medicine. Students learned about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have used the stars for navigation, understood the land and its ecosystems, and employed natural resources for healing long before modern science.
In Science students made slime and oobleck, through these activities, students learned about the properties of materials that do not behave like typical liquids or solids. By mixing simple ingredients to create slime, they observed its stretchy, gooey texture and discovered the chemistry behind slime. The creation of oobleck, a mixture of cornflour and water, demonstrated how it behaves differently under pressure, acting as a solid when squeezed and as a liquid when left to flow. These experiments not only provided a fun and tactile way to understand complex scientific concepts but also encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and curiosity.
