Year 3/4

Reading:

In Reading this term we have been looking at synthesising, summarising and paraphrasing key information from non-fiction texts. These skills enabled students to research for their information reports.

In our Poetry Unit, we have been identifying figurative language in different pieces of writing. Students have annotated a number of poems to identify feelings, themes and hidden meanings within poetry. After exploring a number poems, students will be able to transfer these skills when they create their own in writing.

Writing:

Over the last few weeks, students across Year 3/4 have drafted and published Information Report Books on a chosen topic.  We are so proud of the amazing research, summarising and publishing skills that our students demonstrated. To celebrate, students were able to share their learning with our Year 1/2 students.

These last few weeks of term we have begun a poetry unit where students are writing a variety of poems such as cinquains, haikus, rhyming and shape poems. They will create a book of these at the end of term.

Maths:

This term we have been working on the four operations involving whole number.  There has been a big emphasis on multiplicative thinking and students learning their times tables.

In our most recent unit on Shape, our Year 3/4s have been identifying, drawing and modelling 3D objects and 2D shapes. We have had a lot of fun creating 3D shapes and using nets to construct.

Humanities:

We have working on a Civics and Citizenship unit on levels of government and the role of local government on the community.  Students have identified the different roles of local, state and government and the role that the Surf Coast Shire plays on improving the community.
