Fluency is a crucial skill we focus on here at Skye. We want our students to become confident and skilled readers and mathematicians.
Reading fluency means reading smoothly and accurately, using expression and understanding the meaning of the text. When children read fluently, they can concentrate better on what the story or information is about, rather than just trying to figure out the words.
In math, fluency means students can choose the right methods, solve problems accurately and quickly, and remember math facts easily. They can estimate answers, use efficient strategies, and understand different ways to solve problems. Fluency helps them tackle math challenges with confidence and understand math concepts better
During this holiday break, there are lots of fun and exciting activities you can do with your children to help them become better readers and enjoy family time together.
One great way to improve reading skills is to spend time reading with your children at home. You can visit the local library together and pick out books that interest them. Let them read to you, or you can read to them it is important students are exposed to different stories and texts. This not only helps them learn to read better but also creates special moments with your family.
According to the Australia Reads Research, "86% of children aged 6-17 enjoy being read aloud to at home because it's a special time with their parents"
A great way to engage in maths fluency at home this break is playing some fun and engaging maths games:
Check out our Maths games booklet from our Maths open afternoon
you can also checkout the Love Maths site with amazing video tutorials from Michael Minus on playing maths games at home.
We hope you have an amazing holiday break, and we look forward to seeing everyone well rested and back for a great Term 3.
