Term 2 Week 10:

Dear Families,

We are nearly at the end of a huge term. As mentioned in the previous newsletter,  we are in the midst of the cold and flu season. We have seen a significant increase in illness of both students and staff. We gently remind families that if your child is feeling unwell, has cold, flu or covid symptoms, please ensure they stay home until they are rested, and symptoms have ceased.

Student Reports will be made live on Monday after 4:00pm. Take a moment to have a look at your child's progress throughout this semester. The teachers have spent an enormous amount of time compiling these for your child/ren. Parent Teacher Interviews will occur in Week 2 of Term 3. These bookings will become live during next week. More information will come out via a Newsfeed next week.

On the staffing front, we welcomed back Simon Radford to the school, after his 12month position at Melton West Primary School. Simon will be joining our Year 3 team from the start of Term 3. On a sad note, Jack Rhodes has picked up a position at a school in Warrnambool from the start of Term 3. We thank Jack for all his efforts with the Physical Education program throughout his time at WNPS. Matthew Feeley will take over Jack's full time PE position, whilst Nick Reese will be at the school 4 days a week. All the best Jack in your new venture.

Good luck to are Year 6 students and staff that will be attending Lake Dewar camp from Monday 24th June till Wednesday 26th June. We look forward to hearing about your adventures and time away when you get back.

Attendance at school is very important for your child/ren as they learn new things at school every day. Attending and participating in school will help your child develop: important skills and knowledge to help them learn, social and emotional skills such as good communication, resilience and team work.

FACT SHEET FOR PARENTS/CARERS

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods:

  1. Online: log the absence directly using your school’s IT platform.
  2. Telephone: the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.
  3. Email: the school and provide the staff with your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent?

Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school.

From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.

What is your responsibility?

You are legally required to ensure your child attends school every day or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences or let them know in the morning if your child won’t be at school. In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide the school with your most up-to-date contact details. Generally one notification will be sent per family. Should there be circumstances that require both parents and carers to be notified, please contact the school to make the necessary arrangements.

Just another reminder for all students and parents when riding their bike to school, make sure you stop at the lights or pedestrian crossing, get off your bike and walk your bike across. Parents, please discuss with your child about how to cross safety at traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.

On Tuesday 25th June, all students, staff members and visitors will be involved in a practice fire drill, requiring all to move safely and quietly to the green field.  We have new procedures in place this term that we need to test. Please have a chat your child and advise them that this will be happening and teachers/staff will also speak to their classes to reassure them that they are safe and this is just a drill.

As this is our last newsletter for the term, a reminder that we have an early finish next Friday 28th June at 2:30pm. We will have a whole school assembly from 2:00pm in the gym. Thanks for your continued support throughout this term. Please have a restful break, for those that have some time off, if you are travelling, enjoy and be safe. We look forward to seeing you all back to start Term 3 on Monday 15th July.

Regards,

2025 School Fete

The School Council is on the lookout for a fete organizer to work with our Community Engagement team and to help get the ball rolling on the planning for our 2025 WNPS fete.  If events and planning are your thing and you would like to get involved in this fantastic community event, please let Richard Buckingham or Sarah Nobbs know as soon as possible.

School Council Meeting

In addition to the various community events, other matters that we discussed this week included upcoming repairs and improvements around the school, potential capital works and funding, the year to date financials, difficulties with parking and safe routes for children around WNPS, the significant number of excursions and incursions coming up for the Willy North children and also progress with regards to the Parent Rep program and what the Junior School Council program will look like in 2024.  In addition to this, Shevani Moodley and Kaitlyn Hayes spoke at length on the various education initiatives planned for the school.

Next Meeting

Our next School Council meeting will be held in Term 3 and we are looking forward to discussing the school’s NAPLAN results when these are released.
