Latest News

As we enter the last week of Term 2, it is important to acknowledge the many and varied opportunities that have been afforded to our students. Be it within classrooms with group activities, guest speakers, project-based learning, completion of Arts folios, quizzes, Australian-wide competitions in Maths, English, Hums, Science and LOTE, public speaking, diorama creations, drama performances, musical pieces or sporting competitions (including the Inter-house Athletics Carnival), liturgies, times of reflection, fundraising, community service - the list is endless - we hope our students have found their own passion for education.

In the past week, I was privileged to attend the Wellsprings for Women 30th Anniversary at Parliament House. It was such a lovely celebration of a Kildare Ministries Community Works Organisation who do so much for the local community. A reminder also that Wellsprings will host their High Tea at Killester on Saturday 20th July (the link for tickets is in this Bulletin on the Community Events page).

A reminder also that the Annual Multicultural Dinner is occurring on Saturday 10th August in Kennedy Hall. This is a free event, catered for by the Hospitality students. A huge thank you to Mr Bill Tucker, who has come out of his retirement to oversee the Hospitality area this term whilst Mr  Mark Pudney was on long service leave. The trybooking link is in this Bulletin on the Community Events page.

For parents who are not aware, last week it was announced that the Vietnamese Museum of Australia has been approved for construction. The imminent museum will house 1000+ stories. The museum construction is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2024.

We encourage all of our Vietnamese families to be involved in this project and to consider sharing your story. https://vietnamesemuseum.com.au/

With best wishes for the holidays and a reminder that Term 3 commences Tuesday 16th July for students.

Year 8 Textiles - Paper Bag Skirt

Last term was a huge learning curve for the Year 8 Textiles classes. Not only did they learn to operate a sewing machine, but they also designed and constructed a paper bag skirt.

The students embellished the skirts with lace or ribbon and some even made accessories to match their skirts.

Well done students!

Wellsprings Community Service

Our Year Ten students are doing a wonderful job volunteering at Wellsprings Dandenong. Below I have shared some of their reflections on their experiences.

We really valued and enjoyed this experience at Wellsprings. Seeing the improvement in the women riding their bikes made us very excited and happy. We would definitely recommend people thinking of joining to volunteer in this experience!

Hannah and Vi

It was interesting to see that only some have had the same experiences as me. I felt very inspired by all the women from countries worldwide who were learning a new language and trying their hardest to understand it. All the women showed that they were very keen on studying and getting to know how people in this generation go about their lives on a daily basis.

Samantha

Avesta and Elijana really enjoyed the experience with the little kids in creche and taking care of them. We had a lot of fun and made lots of new memories bonding with the kids.

It was nice to help teach others English and help them understand English. It was a fun experience meeting new people and learning about their cultures. - Mia

My experience was fun, playing with the kids and I enjoyed my time bonding with them. I had a lot of fun communicating and playing with the teachers and little kids there and overall enjoyed my time at Wellsprings. - Monique

It was empowering watching women build recreational skills such as bike riding and learning a new language. The experience was very enjoyable, and the women were eager to learn, showing how much a valuable opportunity Wellsprings for Women is.

The opportunity to be a part of Wellsprings was amazing, fun, and inspirational for both volunteers and the women. It was empowering to see everyone having fun and so driven to complete their goals, whether it’d be to learn to bike or a new language.

It was a great opportunity to help others within our community by empowering them to be more confident in themselves with speaking and teaching English. I was inspired by the women’s eagerness and willingness to be involved in their learning. I am grateful for this experience. Kaylee

This was a truly rewarding experience as I had an opportunity to assist women from diverse backgrounds. It was heartwarming to witness their dedication and enthusiasm for learning a new language despite facing various challenges.

Serena

It was a fun experience playing with the little kids and engaging with them. They were all very lovely and nice and it was nice learning about them.

Thank you year ten for living out our Gospel values.

Year 10 Textiles - Inspiration from Audrey Hepburn

Year 10 Fashion Workshop students created gorgeous dresses inspired by the 50s movie icon Audrey Hepburn and her fashion designer Givenchy.

They researched the dresses and costumes from her movies like Sabrina and Breakfast at Tiffany’s and designed their own take on these dresses, and later constructed them. The results were stunning.

I’m sure even Audrey would have been impressed!

Year 11 Visual Communication Design

In Unit 1, Area of Study 2: ‘Solving communication design problems’ the talented Year 11 VCD students drew on conceptions of good design, and their understanding of human-centered design problems when designing a logo and visual identity for the Killester College Breakfast Club.

The students applied the Develop and Deliver stages of the VCD design process as they responded to a brief they had written themselves to solve a real problem. They experiment with the design elements and principles, typographic conventions, and Gestalt principles of visual perception, while exploring a range of manual and digital methods, media, and materials.

They learn about the copyright and intellectual property obligations faced by designers working in brand strategy in the real world.

Please enjoy the Logos designed by our students.

 Refugee Week

On Thursday 20 June, towards the end of Refugee Week, the Celebrations Committee ran a barbecue to raise money for the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP).

The students did an amazing job cooking, selling, and running the tap-and-go facilities and the cash float. Their teamwork and hospitality were incredible. Thank you to all the students who purchased the food.

We raised $628 profit for BASP who do an incredible job housing and supporting the resettlement of,  and advocating for, asylum seekers.

Thank you also to the Mission Team and RE classes who have written short profiles of our refugee and migrant backgrounds for Refugee Week.

On the noticeboard outside the staffroom we have a world map, with strings attached to the various countries that map the origin of so many of our family histories It is a timely reminder of the need for inclusiveness and the need for solidarity with those most in need. It also reminds us of the rich diversity our school embodies.

Thank you to all who have contributed.

Breakfast Club - World Refugee Day

On Thursday 20 July, our Breakfast Club Team hosted a special breakfast to raise awareness for World Refugee Day. Our students could taste cookies from an Iraqi recipe and a couscous breakfast dish from Northern Africa.

The turnout was huge and we are so thankful for our students' participation and interest in trying new dishes!

Year 10 and 11 Textiles Excursion - NGV: Africa Fashion

Our Year 10 and 11 Textiles excursion to the NGV Africa Fashion Exhibition showcased an array of creative and unique garments from across the African continent, highlighting the rich cultural heritage, diverse identities, and the political struggles experienced by its people. This exhibition features a blend of traditional and contemporary designs that reflect African designers' unique craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Students experienced the exhibition with a guided tour that highlighted key pieces pivotal to designers and individuals at the time. Students slowly moved from room to room metaphorically following a timeline to the specific use and intricacies of textile embellishments and clothing silhouettes.

Students hopefully walked away from the exhibition inspired by the garments and artwork they had seen.

Staff vs Students - Netball

Thank you to our Sports Leaders for organising a lunchtime activity for all to enjoy at lunchtime in Kennedy Hall.

We love a good Staff vs Student match and it did not disappoint!

Congratulations to our #TeamStudents for their win, 15 points to 9.

Music Soirees: 24 - 26 June

The soirées are a way for students to showcase their growth in music through performance. Students from Years 7-12 choose to perform a piece they have been working on to an audience of parents, guardians, teachers and friends!

We had a range of performance genres like jazz, classical and pop. Pieces that were played include:

Curved Stick - John Barret

You Belong With Me - Taylor Swift

Standing Next to You - Jungkook

Ladyfingers - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass

Scoobie Doo Wup - Kerin Bailey

Overall, it was amazing to see the students perform their different styles of music and

to see how far each student has grown musically.

Thank you to Ms Addis, Mr Hickey and all the music teachers for their help in preparing the students for the soirées.
