Accessing your child’s learning through Developmental Rubrics on Compass

With the semester coming to an end there is often an overwhelming amount of information regarding student progress and learning.

For our Year 7-10 classes, we use Developmental Rubrics to outline and document where students sit on the learning continuum.

What is a Developmental Rubric?

They are rubrics we use to assess the performance of students within a unit of work. They differ from traditional rubrics which would state a skill as being high, medium or low, by outlining a skill in its natural progression (eg describe -> explain -> discuss). This makes the rubric much more prescriptive for students and provides clarity about the next steps of their learning.

Why are there gaps?

Some skills aren’t equal to one another. Also, some skills have quite a big jump to their next progression. Therefore, the gaps in rubrics make it clear to students where there is a big jump in what the assessor is looking for.

How do I see the rubrics?

The are accessible all throughout the semester. Simply click on the subject and select ‘Learning Tasks’. You will see a number of ‘Common Assessment Tasks’. Click on the task and select ‘Feedback’. The rubric will be located there.
