Haribo makes children happy and adults as well
Torrens students are embarking on a new unit of learning about the famous Haribo Gummibärchen. Did you know that these colourful little bears were the creation of German entrepreneur, Johannes Peter ‘Hans’ Riegel?
Fun fact: Hans used the first two letters of his first name, surname and city of birth to come up with the title for his business. Check it out! HAns RIegel, BOnn.
Let’s look at the timeline that dates back to when Riegel founded HARIBO and find out what the company is up to today:
1920
Hans Riegel launches his sweets production in a small kitchen with nothing more than a sack of sugar, a marble slab, a stool, a stove, a copper pot and rolling pin.
1922
Riegel invents the DANCING BEAR - a fruit gummy bear that would later become the HARIBO Goldbear we know and love today.
1930
The company comes up with their famous slogan: Haribo macht Kinder froh (Haribo makes children happy).
1945
War and a shortage of raw materials impacts HARIBO. Hans Riegel dies and his wife Gertrude manages the business after World War II.
1962
HARIBO advertises on TV for the first time. The slogan, Haribo macht Kinder froh, is expanded to include und Erwachsene ebenso (and adults too).
1978
A new shape for the gummy bear is created. The feet, which stick out relatively far, are shortened, and the bears have a more compact, stylised appearance.
2005
HARIBO Australia is founded following the arrival of the supermarket chain, ALDI.
2007
85 years of Haribo. To mark the occasion, the Goldbears are given a new flavour - APFEL. Apple is the sixth flavour to join the ranks.
2018
A new headquarters for Haribo is established in Grafschaft, Germany, as they move from their original home in Bonn.
2020
100 years young! The family business is now in its third generation and celebrates its anniversary on 13 December 2020.
