Grade 1/2 Learning Community

Mrs McBride, Mrs Dallas & Mrs Bray, with special help from Miss Jenni and Mrs Harrison

Term 3 began with enthusiasm! All staff in the 1/2 Learning Community were excited to see everyone back and ready for a proactive and enjoyable time ahead.

Literacy

In Week 1, students revised their phonics knowledge by participating in the Daily Explicit Phonics instruction. In Week 2, Mrs McBride and Mrs Dallas/Mrs Bray will keep learning exciting by swapping their phonics teaching groups. Mrs Dallas/Mrs Bray will have the awesome Year 1’s, while Mrs McBride will have the super-duper clever Year 2’s.

Last Friday, Mrs Bray's phonics group focused on the grapheme 'ai' making the sound <ay>. When asked to create their own 'ai' sentence, Aliza wrote the following fantastic sentence.....

I saw a nail in the rain and hail but I failed to get it.

The main thing is I did not get hit by the hail.

Mentor Text

With the Olympics soon upon us,  Year 1/2 students are enjoying Olympic-based language-led discussions within their classes. Our students are learning to understand and use new vocabulary related to The Olympics. Go Australia  Oi Oi Oi!!!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we began the new term by practising using number lines to help us solve counting patterns. We also learnt how to play the card game Wild Jacks.  This game involved using addition or subtraction….but Shhh, Year 1/ 2 students didn’t realise they were using important cooperative and numeracy skills because they were having too much fun!

Integrated Learning:Do you have a Story to Tell?

Term 3, our Integrated Learning topic is Community.  In Week 1, Year 1/ 2 students went on a virtual tour of Beaufort/Raglan and Trawalla using Google Maps to identify places found within our community.

Did you know… Originating in Denmark, instead of borrowing a book to read a story, they’ll borrow a person instead!  Throughout Term 3, as part of our Community unit, Year 1/2A invites Parents/Grandparents to join us in our classroom. This will be an opportunity for us to ask questions about someone’s life and experiences.  It may even be an opportunity for your child to ‘show off’ those they love the most, whilst we learn about those people who live in our community!

If this is something you as a parent, or a grandparent/guardian would be keen to be involved in, please contact Mrs Bray’s email to let her know

karina.denney-bray@education.vic.gov.au  with your preference for participating on a Thursday or Friday, between the hours of 1-2 pm.

Bangers & Smash

After a fun and engaging week, Year 1/2A students finished off a very busy first-week using pool noodles to tap along with Danny Go!
