Around Our Level
Last week our Prep students performed for the very first time at assembly on Monday. They showcased their Production item titled ‘Believe in your Dreams’. We are very proud of their performance and for all their hard work during Performing Arts with Mrs Smith. Production will take place at the end of term and our Preps will be performing on stage at the George Wood Theatre at Yarra Valley Grammar School.
Congratulations to all our Prep students who celebrated 100 Days of School on Wednesday 31st of August. There were lots of amazing and creative ideas, including lots of elderly citizens, grey hair, walking sticks and pearl necklaces. We had a fantastic time undertaking a number of special activities in our classrooms, which included counting by 10’s to 100, bundling using pop sticks to make 10 groups of 10 to make 100, counting to 100 and recognising 100. In the afternoon, students spent time with their Grade 5 Buddies who made them a special 100 Days of School bookmark. They played partner games with a dice called ‘race to 100’ and went home with a certificate as a keepsake of their 100 Day Milestone. The children enjoyed decorating and filling their 100 lunch boxes with yummy food.
In Literacy, we have been learning about the sounds ‘y', 'j' and 'q', 'kw’ in UFLI sessions and recognising the heart words (are/look/book/from). In class, we have been undertaking Guided Reading sessions using decodable texts in small group instruction for targeted teaching.
In Writing, we have been creating list poems titled ‘Ouch’, about all the things that make us say ‘ouch’, like jamming your finger in the door, ripping off a band aid, a sore tummy etc. We have been writing recounts about our weekends remembering capital letters, finger spaces, neat writing, sounding out and stretching out unfamiliar words and using full stops at the end of our sentences.
In Maths, we have been learning about numbers from 10 to 20. This includes writing the numbers, making the numbers and playing card, dice and board games. Ask your child to teach you how to play our latest game, ‘1234’ WIN THEM ALL. They absolutely love this game.
In Geography, we have been learning about Australia as part of our whole school focus on the Olympics. Learning about the different parts of our flag, the Indigenous flag, states and territories, wildlife and venomous creatures has been interesting. We look forward to our special Olympics Day on Friday.
A big thank you to our wonderful Parents Association for organising the ‘Cheer Toastie Truck’ to visit our school on Tuesday, providing lunch for our students. We would like to thank our hard-working parents who volunteer their time to make days like this possible for our children.
We would also like to welcome back Mr McDowell in Prep A who is undertaking his final teaching placement. We wish him all the very best as he gains valuable teaching experience in the classroom. He will also be planning lessons in Maths and Wellbeing.
