Year 10 ACC Football Carnival
On Wednesday, 14 August, the Year 10 College Football Team played in the annual ACC Division 1 Carnival held at Lightning Park in Noranda. The team was met with wet conditions but were excited to get the games underway. In total, there were 4 matches with some strong opposition from schools such as Our Lady of Mercy Bunbury, Emmanuel College, Sacred Heart College and John XX111 College.
The team played well with some strong performances. It was really pleasing to see the teamwork on display as well as the strong attack on the ball. Some of the passages of play from defence to attack were simply outstanding.
In a very even tournament, the team won 1 out of the 4 matches. All matches were a loss by 1 or 2 points and could have gone either way!
A big thank you to Mr Truss for coaching the team on the day, the ACC and the parents that came along and showed their support.
Junior Soccer Knockout Round
The Junior Soccer Team qualified for the knockout round after winning the round-robin stage last term. The team played away against Lynwood SHS. It was a tight contest with both teams having dominant patches in the first half and at the half-time break the score remained nil all. Mazenod came out the more dominant side pressing the Lynwood defence with some creative play and good pressure. It was Lynwood who scored the breakaway goal after capitalising on a defensive error, scoring less than 10 minutes before the end of the game. We continued to press with nothing to lose, causing Lynwood to concede a corner with seconds left in the game. The corner from Nic R resulted in Hamish P smashing a header home from close range to score an equalizer in dramatic fashion just as the whistle sounded!
With the game finishing in a draw the teams played out the dreaded penalty shootout. After missing the first penalty, Oskar C was the match-winner, saving 3 consecutive penalties, sending Mazenod into the next stage of the competition.
Well done to the team on an incredible victory. A big thanks to the large contingent of Mazenod parents who came to watch the game and support the team.
