STEM  - Term 3 Weeks 2 & 3

Last week in STEM, all students explored the effects of exercise to our heart rate. They had to locate their heart rates and see the difference between resting heart rate and following some movement. We connected this to the Olympic athletes competing over in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This week, all grade levels commenced their Science topics for the term.

Preps looked at the weather and learnt words that can be used to describe the weather.

Grade 1/2s looked at why we have day and night.

Grade 3/4s explored the sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock types.

Grade 5/6s looked at extreme weather events and natural disasters.

Week 2 STEM certificates go to: Buck Tomlinson, Casey Menzel and 5/6A.

Week 3 STEM certificates go to: Harriet Marson and Sienna Joseph.

As was advertised on our school’s Facebook page earlier this week, we have our upcoming ‘Family STEM Night’ occurring on Thursday August 15th in the Open Learning Area from 6pm to 7pm. Attendees will participate in a variety of STEM-related activities that I am sure will be a fun experience for all involved, with prizes to be won. A reminder that parents/carers must attend with their child/ren on the night.

MUSIC NEWS TERM 3 WEEKS 2 & 3

Hello everyone,

First of all, we are only 1 ½ weeks away from the first auditions for this year’s Gray St’s Got Talent! So, it’s time to start practicing your item: whether that’s a song, a dance, a juggling act, an instrumental piece, with friends or on your own!

This last two weeks in Music, the Preps have danced to the beat, and explored high and low voices.

The 1/2s wrote their own music for percussion instruments, and read graphic notation to play storm music.

Last week the 3/4s thought about how music expresses feelings, and this week made sound effects for a city rush hour.

The 5/6s sang, played a blues medley on keyboards, guitars and ukuleles, and beat-boxed!

In Choir News, we had a party last Tuesday to thank all the choir members for the hard work they have put in so far this year.

MUSIC AWARDS

Week 2’s classMusic Award went to 1/2A for great work in Music.

The individual awards went to Camilla Robertson, Sophia Nice, Lilah Riley in 1/2B for fantastic percussion playing.

Week 3’s Class Music Award went to 5/6A for amazing rhythm work.

The individual awards went to Marcus Moore-Hayes for awesome drumming, and Jack Thomas for great guitar coaching, both in 5/6A.

Thank you,

Mrs Megan Garland

In The Artroom  -  Term 3 Week 2

We continued our focus on First Nation’s artwork this week in the artroom with students painting, designing and modelling Aboriginal based artwork.

Prep – gr 2 traced Australian animal outlines onto watercolour paper then painted all base colours using watercolour paint. Dots were added using acrylic paints and cotton buds.

Gr 3 & 4 finished colouring an Australian wooden animal, (these can be seen on display in the front office). Students then created paintings and modelled stories with playdough and Aboriginal symbols.

Gr 5 & 6 completed their Indigenous artwork on timber boomerangs. Students then had a choice of creating Indigenous based paintings using watercolour and acrylic paints or developing a story using playdough to make the symbols and tell the story.

Photos of the artwork has been placed on the school’s facebook page.

Art club is on a Tuesday, at middle bell. This week and next, art club will be for gr 5 & 6.

Art extension continued on Wednesday with specific gr 3 students participating in watercolour workshops during their lunchtime. These workshops will continue for another 2 weeks.

Time is running out to enter the Coleraine Art and Photography show as they need to be submitted by 26th July. If you haven’t submitted your form yet, please do so by midnight on Friday.

Week 3

We commenced our “Olympics” themed art unit this week with lots of discussion about the different events and favourite athletes.

All grades used oil pastels and learnt new techniques and colour shading to enhance their artwork. Cardboard templates of athletes were traced then big bold bright oil pastels colours were added to the patterned background. Last of all, the black lines and silhouette of athlete were coloured. These are on display in the Open Learning Area.

Photos of the artwork has been placed on the school’s facebook page.

Art club is on a Tuesday, at middle bell. This week and next, art club will be for gr Preps.

Art extension will continue on Wednesday with specific gr 3 students participating in watercolour workshops during their lunchtime. These workshops will continue for another 2 weeks due to the interruption due to the swimming program.
