Year 5

LITERACY

Our Year 5s have started stronge with their class novel War Horse, which focuses on a young horse named Joey during WWI. Students have drawn on their knowledge of the text to write their own narratives about an animal of their choice. They have been exploring Tier 3 vocabulary and incorporating it into their writing, with a continued focus on these words for homework.

In preparation for NAPLAN, we have also begun exploring persuasive writing. Students are currently drafting their own persuasive texts on whether horses should or should not have been used during WWI.

MATHS

For Maths this term, students have focused on multiplication and division, factors and multiples, and worded problems. We have been using the strategy Understand, Plan, Answer, Check (UPAC) to support us when solving worded problems. Students have been practising this strategy daily in preparation for NAPLAN.

TOPIC

We have loved learning about Australia in the 1800s, including the Victorian Era, the Industrial Revolution, penal colonies, and life in colonial Australia. Students have some important moments in Australia's history such as the First Fleet, Matthew Flinders, and the Victorian Gold Rush.

BUDDIES

We have been extremely lucky to spend valuable time with our Prep buddies. We have been working on making positive choices and being strong role models for them. We have also had lots of fun using Green Hats to develop our building and problem solving skills.

Year 6

Literacy

Our Year 6 students have been engaged in a novel study of Us Mob, Walawurru. Throughout the unit, they have explored themes of identity, belonging and culture, while deepening their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. Students have focused on close reading strategies, analysing character development and setting, and responding to the text through thoughtful discussion and structured written responses. They have also built their vocabulary and comprehension skills by examining key language choices and considering how the author conveys meaning and cultural significance.

Maths

Our Year 6 students have been exploring different types of data, including numerical and categorical data. They have been learning how to collect, organise and interpret data sets, and represent their findings using a range of graphs. Students have practised selecting appropriate graph types, plotting data accurately, and analysing trends and patterns to draw meaningful conclusions.

Canberra 2026

Some of my favourite parts of camp were the Australian High Court, the AIS, and the Australian War Memorial.

The reason I loved the Australian High Court was because it was so interesting, and we had a great tour guide. I learnt about lawyers and barristers, how the judges get the final vote, and I thought it was just incredible.

I also loved the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) because we got to see all the different gyms and where the athletes train. Another reason was the games at the end, where we got to try simulators and explore different Olympic sports. It was so cool!

Another highlight was the Australian War Memorial. It was both fascinating and emotional to see how things were during WWI and WWII. I loved all the dioramas and the real artefacts from the world wars.

That’s why I loved going to Canberra in 2026.

PACER

Students from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs such as visiting Parliment house, The War Memorial, National Gallery, Australian Institute of Sport, The Royal MINT and much more with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
