Students

Mrs Jayarani Salerno, Assistant Principal Students

It has been a great start to the school year, and I want to commend our students for their positive, settled return. Classrooms are calm, routines are re-established, and students are engaging strongly with their learning and embracing the way we do things here at St Stephen’s.

A new initiative for 2026 is the College Behaviour Matrix, and we are currently in the student feedback phase. Students have provided thoughtful input, and this process is progressing well. Once this feedback phase is complete—and once the matrix has received its new name—we will be sharing it with families for consultation. We look forward to your engagement in this next step.

Our Year 7 students deserve a special mention. They have made a wonderful start:

  • Navigating new routines with confidence
  • Using their lockers effectively
  • Getting to their classes (mostly without getting lost!)
  • Making new friends
  • Engaging positively with teachers and new subjects

Their energy and enthusiasm have been a joy to see.

As always, the beginning of the year has been full of activity. Highlights so far include:

  • The alternate program for Year 7
  • Opening Mass
  • Commissioning of the Innovation Centre
  • Laptop induction for Year 7
  • Student Leadership Retreat
  • Swimming Carnival

These events have helped set a vibrant tone for 2026.

We are now preparing for the upcoming Cross Country event. Unfortunately—as is often the case during the Wet Season—the weather has again played a part in limiting opportunities for a full whole school program. But we certainly cannot blame the rain for raining!

A Few Important Reminders

To help keep expectations clear, please note the following:

  • Pastoral shorts: All students are required to wear the new pastoral shorts.
  • Footwear: Flat-bottom sports shoes are not permitted.
  • Hair accessories: A small ribbon is permitted; large ribbons are not.
  • Hats: Hats are compulsory every day. They can be purchased at the College or at Tina’s Fashion in Mareeba.

We sincerely thank all students for the way they have started the year. If this is an indication of what is ahead, we are in for a wonderful year.

If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out.
