Mathematics – Fractions

This week in Mathematics, our class is focusing on developing a strong understanding of fractions.

Students are learning to identify and represent fractions of a shape, such as shading one-half, one-third or three-quarters of different models. We are discussing how equal parts are essential when dividing shapes and how the numerator and denominator work together to describe a fraction.

We are also exploring fractions of a collection. This involves finding a fraction of a group of objects (for example, finding ¾ of 20). Students are learning to use grouping, division and multiplication strategies to solve these problems and explain their thinking clearly.

As part of extending our understanding, students are working with mixed numbers and improper fractions. They are learning:

  • What a mixed number represents
  • What an improper fraction represents
  • How to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction
  • How to convert an improper fraction back into a mixed number

We are using visual models, number lines and hands-on materials to support understanding before moving into more abstract problem-solving.

You can support your child at home by:

  • Asking them to explain how they know parts are equal
  • Using real-life examples (cutting fruit, sharing food, dividing collections of objects)

It has been wonderful to see students building confidence as they deepen their understanding of fractional concepts.

MAO-WM-01: develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly

MA2-PF-01: represents and compares halves, quarters, thirds and fifths as lengths on a number line and their related fractions formed by halving (eighths, sixths and tenths)
