Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,
Here we are at the end of Week 4, and it has been wonderful to see students settling in so well to the routines and expectations of the school year. In 2026 we have welcomed 255 new Year 7 students to the College and another 50 students across other year levels. Classrooms are busy, the grounds are full of activity, and there is a real sense of enthusiasm across the College.
There has already been plenty happening, with Year 7 Camp providing our newest students the opportunity to build friendships, develop independence and embrace new challenges. We have also seen students represent the school at the East Gippsland Senior Boys Cricket competition, and the Interschool Gymkhana. Swimming Trials are now complete with many students making it through to the next stage. Alongside these events, a number of classes have been out on excursions, enriching their learning beyond the classroom. With so much already achieved in the first few weeks, it is clear that we are heading into a vibrant and productive term.
This week we had our first Student Representative Council (SRC) meeting for 2026 with our student leaders from all year levels. They are an impressive group of young people who demonstrate integrity, initiative and a genuine commitment to our College community. Our student leaders, mentors and house captains from Years 10 and 11 will work alongside our Year 12 College Captains to provide a strong and authentic student voice. Together, they will share ideas, support their peers and contribute positively to College life. We look forward to seeing the impact of their leadership throughout the year.

On a personal note, I am very pleased to have returned to the classroom this year, teaching Year 10 English. As 2026 marks the launch of our new instructional model, it is important that I maintain a clear and informed understanding of its impact within classrooms. Returning to teaching enables me to observe its implementation first hand, monitor student engagement and learning growth, and work alongside staff to ensure the model is embedded consistently and effectively across the College. It is both rewarding and energising to work directly with our students as they develop their skills, confidence and critical thinking.
Thank you, parents, grandparents and carers, for your continued support of Bairnsdale Secondary College students and staff. There are plenty of challenges nowadays for young people and they will all need support at some time. Supporting the well being and learning of every child (regardless of circumstance) is the core business of Bairnsdale Secondary College staff. We will continue to advocate for our students.
Every student has their story and every student matters!
Sincerely,
Tony Roberts
Principal
