Year 9 Students Learn the Art of Furoshiki Wrapping.
Recently, all Year 9 Japanese classes took part in a Japanese digital incursion where we learned the traditional art of furoshiki wrapping. Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese technique that uses cloth to wrap and carry items; it is practical and environmentally friendly.
During the session, we were guided by an instructor from the Japan Foundation, Sydney, who joined us through a Teams call. She showed us how to do a musubi knot, and how furoshiki is used in everyday life in Japan. We followed the instructions and made various contraptions like a water bottle holder, a watermelon holder, lunchbox wrapping, and a laptop holder.
It was a very fun and rich experience that helped us learn about Japanese culture and develop a skill while learning. Many students used different, vibrant, but meaningful pieces of fabric and learned how a simple piece of fabric can be used in such creative ways while also being environmentally friendly and sustainable.
