To finish up with the Weeden Heights mini–Olympic Games, the grade 2 students created a medal of their own for their impressive efforts in each event they competed in.
Each student chose an event they enjoyed competing in the most or one they wish to try.
Well done to our Weeden Heights athletes! Incredible work.
Students had a wonderful time playing the arcade games created by the year 3s and 4s.
Students in year 5/6 have been investigating electrical circuits and how they work to power lights, fans and other objects.
Students in years P-2 have been investigating light and sound, both man made and natural.
The y 5/6 students who joined the French Club last week cooked a delicious dessert called 'Poire Belle Hélène'. Our recipe was more traditional than the one used in the previous photo and they looked more like the following photo (we were so busy eating that we forgot to take a photo of the final result!!). However, we know for sure that our pears would have been as delicious :-)!!
Poire Belle Hélène is a classic French dessert composed of pears poached in a sugar syrup, served with vanilla ice cream then drizzled with a hot chocolate ganache.
Where does this dessert come from?
Renowned chef Auguste Escoffier invented this dessert in the 1800s, naming it after Jacques Offenbach’s Operetta, La Belle Hélène. Hortense Catherine Schneider, who played the role of Helen of Troy, was one of the great stars of operettas in the 1800s and appeared in many of Offenbach’s other operettas. La belle Hélène was so popular that several dishes named in her honour appeared on menus across Paris (tournedos belle Helene, fish belle Helene, etc.).
Rapidly gaining popularity, this dessert is now part of France's gastronomic heritage. A must-have bistro dessert, pastry chefs and chefs alike have seized on this mythical dessert to create their own versions.
We made our own vanilla ice cream and it was delicious!
Most French restaurants, in France and overseas, offer this classic dessert on their menu. However, the fancier the restaurant, the fancier the look of the pears you will get...
