The Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) is a nationwide competition, run every year by the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV). MTQ is a great opportunity for a richer, open ended way of learning maths. This is the second year that Karoo PS had participated in the competition.
At the beginning of Term 2, the amazing Mrs Vitas (our smart, witty, and dedicated High Abilities Leader, Maths Learning Specialist, and Year 3 & 4 Sub-School Leader) put the call out to all passionate Maths enthusiasts in Year 3-6, inviting them to take part in MTQ 2024.
During Term 2 and Term 3, MTQ students worked with Mrs Vitas one session per week. They worked throughout the July holidays to expand on their idea, before embarking on a significate amount of work throughout Term 3, much of which was completed outside of school hours. Students worked tirelessly on their projects, showcasing their creativity, critical thinking, and mathematical prowess. These students demonstrated outstanding commitment to complete and present their investigation and the results are awesome!
MTQ Expo
On Tuesday night, we held our MTQ Expo, which was a perfect opportunity to celebrate all the learning and achievements of MTQ students, who delighted in sharing their projects with us. A special thank you to everyone who attended.
We were delighted to see such an amazing parent turnout! Your support and encouragement made the night a memorable celebration of our students' hard work and dedication.
The energy in the room was palpable as parents, students, and teachers came together to admire the incredible range of projects. The talent and imagination of our students were on full display! Congratulations to Our Budding Mathematicians!
The results
Our students excelled, and we could not be prouder of their efforts. Congratulations to all who participated! Each project demonstrated a unique approach to exploring mathematical concepts and reflected a deep understanding and appreciation of mathematics.
This year, 36 investigations were entered. We received 5 High Distinctions, 8 Distinctions, 16 Credits and 7 Encouragement awards.
Students who received a High Distinction will be will be invited to attend an award ceremony at RMIT University in October. They will also have their projects submitted for consideration at the state level, and we wish them the best of luck!
Celebrating the Learning Journey
Participating in MTQ is about much more than just winning awards. It’s an opportunity for our students to explore mathematics beyond the classroom, solve complex problems, and express their ideas in unique and creative ways. We are incredibly proud of the courage and passion our students have shown throughout this journey.
On Reflection
The success of the MTQ Showcase Night would not have been possible without the hard work of our dedicated staff, namely Mrs Vitas who has supported the students throughout the MTQ journey. We also want to acknowledge the invaluable support of our parents and guardians. Your engagement, from brainstorming ideas at home to attending the showcase, has been instrumental in making this event a success.
Thank you to everyone for making this year’s MTQ such a memorable and inspiring experience. We are fortunate to have such a supportive and enthusiastic school community!
Looking Forward to Next Year!
As we celebrate this year's achievements, we are already looking forward to next year’s Maths Talent Quest. We encourage all students to start thinking about potential ideas for their projects and consider joining us again for another fantastic year of mathematical exploration and discovery.
Warm regards,
Ashley Kuusela
