Physical Education | Update

During PE, Term 3 bounced off with developing our basketball skills and game knowledge. Students focused on a range of skills including dribbling, passing (chest passes and bounce passes), shooting, lay ups, jump shots and implementing a defensive stance. They learnt about basic areas on the court such as the half court line, the sidelines, the baselines, the keys, the 3-point lines and the free throw lines.

Rules and procedures of the game were also covered, including travelling, fouls, double dribbles, setting up for free throws, throw ins and what happens after a team scores. Each class relished in the opportunity to put all of their hard work into practice, when we concluded the Unit with a real basketball match. Luckily, the weather has been on our side, with only 2 days of PE for Term 3 being held inside due to the rain. Fortunately, those classes who did have to move to indoors for basketball, were still able to develop all of the same important basketball skills as they would have outside with our trusty ‘balloons in socks’ (except for dribbling, of course)!

It was extremely pleasing to see the effort and progress made from Week 1 to Week 4. Many students had to be risk takers and were completely out of their comfort zone, yet still managed to be positive and have ’a red-hot go’!

In Week 5, the kids were introduced to a sport that many of them had never heard of; Pickleball.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports throughout the world today. It is played on a badminton sized court and can be played as a singles or doubles game. It is played with a rectangular paddle and a ball similar to a waffle ball (plastic with holes in it).

A very unique part of the court in Pickleball is the non-Volley Zone, commonly referred to at the ‘kitchen’! Students have been focusing on the underarm serve, learning the difference between a rally and a volley, as well as developing their ability to return a serve using backhand and forehand swings, ensuring that they abide by the 2-bounce rule. This is a rule, unique to Pickleball, which ensures that the ball must bounce on the receiver’s side of the court before it is returned over the net. Once the ball has bounced and been returned, it must then bounce on the OTHER side of the net before it is returned. Then, play continues and it able to include volleys (in the air shots) from anywhere on the court, except for the kitchen.

Sporting news | On Thursday the 12th of September, the Sovereign and Eureka Division Track and Field Events will be held at Llanberris.
