Auslan Report

During Auslan this fortnight, Students will cover the topics: Sea Animals, Days of the Week/Months of the Year, Numbers and Weather. When learning about Sea Animals, students will learn to sign the words: seahorse, turtle, water, shark, sea, crab, whale, dolphin, octopus, seal, jellyfish and starfish. Students will engage in activities that will involve miming the sea animals and students will have to show their guesses by signing the word. Grade 5 and 6 students will watch a story about sea animals in Auslan and will respond to the text by writing the words they recognise.

Students will learn about Days of the Week and Months of the Years. They will learn to sign the words: week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Year, month and (all months of the year). Activities will involve finger spelling the days of the week and students guessing the day of the week signed. Students will also learn to sign the ‘Days of the Week’ song. Grade 5 and 6 students will play games that involve sitting in a circle and students will go around in order to sign the days of the week including months of the year. Other activities will entail choosing students and assigning teams where the teacher will write down the 7 days of the week on a piece of paper and students will have to place these words in order.

In the Numbers lesson, students will revisit learning and focus on counting numbers 1-20. Activities will involve signing all the numbers in Auslan and working in a circle to sign the numbers in order. Students will also learn the ‘Counting’ song. From grades 3-6 lessons will be more challenging as they will need to count by 1s, 2s, 5s and then 10s to 100. Students will also play a game of “Buzz” which will encourage students to think about numbers and use the correct signs in Auslan.

Students will also learn to sign words for the ‘Weather’. The signs taught include: weather, rain, wind, snow, wet, warm, cold, hot, storm, sun, lightning, thunder, clouds, dry and hail including the phrase “Weather today what?” Lessons will include drawing different types of weather and students will share their pictures and learn to sign the weather word that applies to the drawing. Grade 5 and 6 students will play miming games like charades where they will mime something to do with that particular weather (like putting on a raincoat or opening up an umbrella) and students will have to guess by signing the correct word for the weather that the charades corresponds to.

As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
