Learning Resource Centre News

We have been busy celebrating the joy of reading in the LRC.

Book Week 19th-23rd August

Day 1

Thank you to everyone who dressed up to celebrate the start of book week. Our students LOVED IT!!!!  Our students enjoyed making bookmarks and designing book covers.

Day 2:

We got creative.  Ms. Millard worked with our students to create some Blackout Poetry. Blackout poetry is created by using existing text and erasing parts of it. What is left is a whole new piece of literature. This type of poetry can be relaxing and is accessible to all ages. Other students were busy making and decorating Story Catchers😊

 Day 3:

We slowed down and had a well-earned cuppa and a biscuit whilst enjoying a book 😊

Day 4: Manga Day

Manga is a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels. In Japanese, the term “manga” can refer to all kinds of cartooning, comics, and animation, as it is composed of two kanji- “man” meaning “whimsical and impromptu” and “ga” meaning “pictures”.

A huge thank you to Ms Zhou and Liam Jury (Year 8) for presenting the history of Manga and exploring how to read Manga.

Day 5: Living Books

We had members of the Wyndham Community visit our school and speak with students from 7E and 10B. These “Living Books” shared inspiring stories of their lives. At the end of the sessions, we asked our students to reflect on the stories and what they learned. Some of the responses are below.

“To believe in yourself.”

“You have choices.”

“If plan A does not work out, do not give up.”

“To like myself.”

“You don’t have to follow one path.”

Book Shop Visit

On Tuesday 10th September Sue and Rebecca from Book and Paper visited the school. It was so valuable for our students to hear about different styles and genres of books.  Students from 7A, 7G, 8E, 8C and Young Mob interacted with the books and selected books that they were interested in reading. These books will now be purchased and available in the LRC for students to borrow. We learned that our students were interested in books about sport and sports people, true stories (especially a story about bears attacking people!!), non- fiction texts, adventure, and graphic novels😊Thank you to the staff who allowed their students to visit the LRC: Audrey, George, Julie, Virginia, and Kristy 😊

Schoolastic Book Club

A reminder that our year 7 students are participating in Scholastic Book Club this year. Up to twice a term, during the school year, I will send home a Club catalogue with a different selection of books offered for all ages.

The books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests, and they are inexpensive (some books cost as little as $3).

It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe, and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
