Year 4 Potato Olympics

In celebration of Numeracy Week and the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Year 4 students have been eagerly participating in the 2024 Potato Olympics. Students were asked to bring in a potato from home that would compete in the Olympics. They were their own very special coaches towards their potato, providing lots of encouragement, positive affirmations and training. Students were divided into Potato Countries: Scallopitaly, Bakengland, Roastralia, Spudireland.

Throughout each day, students and their potato competed in various events. As part of numeracy week, students applied their measurement skills in various Potato Olympic events by measuring the distance, measuring the volume of water and measuring mass. This allowed students to investigate and demonstrate the different ways measurement can be incorporated at the Olympics which can also be used at home for everyday discussions and activities.

Families are encouraged to continue to share and promote discussion about maths in every day activities. On behalf of the Year 4 team, we would like to thank all families for making this event possible through their assistance in sourcing their child a potato.

Year 3 Potato Olympics

As part of Numeracy week and in celebration of the Olympics, the year 3 students had their own ‘Greenvale Potato Olympics’. Students each created their own potato athlete to compete in a range of events such as the ‘Potato Marathon’, ‘Potato Sprint’ and ‘Potato Splash’.

They explored numeracy skills such as symmetry, measurement, capacity and mass. Students worked collaboratively with their peers to compete in the games. They then assessed their results to determine which athletes finished on the podium to receive a gold, silver or bronze medal.
