Year 3

Literacy

The Grade 3's have been exploring the morpheme "mis-," which means "wrongly" or "incorrectly," during their morphology lessons. They’ve been practising how this prefix changes the meaning of words, such as turning "understand" into "misunderstand," indicating something understood incorrectly, or "judge" into "misjudge," meaning to judge wrongly. This is helping them grasp how prefixes can alter the meaning of words.

Writing

The Grade 3 students are currently working on expanding their sentences by incorporating conjunctions, verbs, and tensed verbs. By using conjunctions like "and," "but," and "because," they can link ideas and add more detail to their sentences. For example, instead of writing "The cat sat," they might write "The cat sat on the mat and watched the birds outside." Additionally, practicing with verbs and tensed verbs helps them to accurately describe actions and when they occur, adding depth and clarity to their writing.

Book Week

During the 2024 Book Week, themed "Reading is Magic," our Grade 4 and 3 students had an enchanting experience. The grade 3’s and 4’s joined forces to participate in a series of creative rotations inspired by various books. In "The Concrete Playground," they coloured in and drew vibrant pictures with chalk on the concrete. For "Birds Have Arms," they crafted imaginative birds with human arms, and in "Can You Teach a Fish to Climb a Tree," they created whimsical hanging fish. The students also worked on "Bowerbird Blues," where they built detailed dioramas. The activities sparked their creativity and brought the magic of reading to life.

We had lots of fantastic book week costumes that were truly memorable. Well done to all parents for your hard work in making your child look like a true character from a book. We had an amazing week reading lots of books and participating in lots of fun activities.

Year 4

Literacy

The Year Fours have been exploring the morpheme "hypo-," which means "below" or "under." Through their lessons, they’ve learned how this prefix alters the meaning of words, such as "hypothermia," which refers to a condition where the body temperature is below normal, or "hypodermic," meaning something located beneath the skin. This study is helping them understand how prefixes can change the meaning of words.

Writing

The Grade 4s have been doing an excellent job of writing compound sentences. A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, such as "and," "but," or "so." For example, in the sentence "The sun was shining, and the children played outside," both "The sun was shining" and "the children played outside" are independent clauses that could stand alone as sentences.

Understanding and using compound sentences is important because it helps students connect related ideas, making their writing more coherent and fluid. By combining thoughts within a single sentence, students can add variety to their writing and avoid repetitive, choppy statements. This skill is essential as it allows them to express more complex ideas clearly and effectively, a key aspect of strong writing.Make sure you are asking your child what they are learning throughout the day.

First Communion

On Thursday, 22nd August, our lovely Year Four students took part in their First Holy Communion. To prepare for this special occasion, the children enjoyed a retreat day filled with meaningful activities. They decorated chalices, symbolising the blood of Christ, and proudly hung them in the church. They also baked three different types of bread, each representing the body of Christ. To make the day even more memorable, they had some fun playing a Communion-themed bingo game. The retreat was a wonderful opportunity for the children to reflect on the importance of Communion and to prepare their hearts for this sacred sacrament.

Congratulations to all the participants—we are incredibly proud of how beautifully you read, received Communion, and engaged throughout the evening.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Zena for her dedication and for capturing stunning photos of our students. We also deeply appreciate everyone who contributed their time and effort to make the night truly special.
