Assistant Principal's Message

Grant Rounsley

RU OK?

Hello Valkstone Primary School community,

I'd like to bring your attention to an important day on the Australian calendar: R U OK? Day.

Here at Valkstone Primary School, we support and encourage the messaging of R U OK? Day through our everyday interactions with students across the school to support them in developing their social, emotional and communication skills. It is important for our students to know that we as educators  are here to support them in challenging times.

R U OK? Day, occurs on Thursday, 12 September 2024. It is a crucial awareness campaign that encourages meaningful conversations about mental health. This brilliant Australian initiative has gained global recognition for its simple yet powerful message: Asking someone "Are you okay?" can make a significant difference in their life.

The day aims to promote connection and support among friends, family, and colleagues. By fostering a culture of open communication, R U OK? Day helps break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourages people to seek help when needed.

R U OK? Day supports individuals struggling with various mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, stress and loneliness. It also addresses more severe conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The campaign recognises that anyone can experience mental health difficulties, regardless of age, gender or background.

By participating in R U OK? Day, people can learn how to recognise signs of distress in others, initiate conversations and provide support. This simple act of reaching out can prevent isolation, promote early intervention and potentially save lives. Remember, every day is an opportunity to ask, "Are you okay?"
