As we near the end of Wellness Week at College, it is possible to think that spending time and energy on fun and engaging activities such as discos, Staff v Student netball games, Lego building, kindness notes and Guess the Teacher Photo, is not connected to learning. This could not be further from the truth. Learners of all ages – adults included – learn best when they feel that the learning environment in which they belong can be a happy and safe place. The events that have been organised across our Junior and Senior campuses this week have allowed students and staff to connect in a different way, strengthening the trust and relationship, which then has a positive impact on learning in the classroom.
As we approach the end of Term 3, which is often a challenging, busy term where student motivation can wane, tiredness and cold, wet weather can affect our moods, Wellness Week provides a moment of respite and fun to reenergise our learners – and our teachers – and build connections.
These connections support student learning within our classrooms, but also looking to the years ahead as students move into different classrooms or campuses. As we have all participated in activities this week, we have learnt something about each other and this knowledge builds bridges of trust for our staff and students which are then key to facilitating a classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking support and engaging with the challenges provided.
So please ask your children what activities they participated in this week and share with them how these moments can support their learning in so many different ways.
