What's happening in Year 4/5/6 space?

𖥧 Term 4 𖥧

(hello, welcome)

We started our week at the Remembrance Day ceremony at the War Memorial, where our leadership shone with respect and grace. Huntah and Liam proudly represented St. Joseph’s by laying the wreath. Ivy spent the previous week crafting a moving speech about heroic nurse Ellen Savage, highlighting how "nurses sometimes get forgotten". A message that resonated so deeply a member of the Historical Museum requested a copy. Congratulations, Ivy!

Finally, Tatum, Morgan, and Andy took on the responsibility of signing the Ode just an hour before the ceremony, delivering an exceptional performance.

Literacy

This week, we began preparing for our upcoming persuasive speeches.

Building on our previous work exploring persuasive devices and how authors use them to effectively convince an audience, we focused on examining exemplar speeches. We identified the persuasive devices used, like rhetorical questions and personal pronouns and discussed their impact. Learners then brainstormed potential speech topics, and we’re excited to see their passions come to life in their speeches!

Meanwhile, our 4/5/6 students have been practicing being reflective learners, using mistakes as valuable learning opportunities. In our word study session this week, we focused on mastering words we’ve yet to fully conquer. We investigated the prefix mis and contractions like should've and didn't.

Discovery Day

Last Friday, the whole school spent the day connecting, researching, and collaborating on our biology topics, focusing on life cycles, habitats, and environmental care.

In the morning, we explored subjects like chickens, tadpoles, plant health, and habitats, using a variety of rich texts to support our research, which learners recorded and shared.

The rest of the day was hands-on: some learners worked with Deb and myself in the garden, helping to maintain, replant, and restore the chicken pen and veggie gardens. Meanwhile, others teamed up with Gab and James to design and create a suitable pond habitat for our tadpoles.

The day was filled with excitement as we learned from one another, enjoying the chance to work together and share our curiosity about nature.
