Year 3 - Middle Unit

The year might be coming to an end, but the great learning continues in Year 3!

Literacy

In Reading we have been learning about all types of procedural texts, what we use them for and the different parts that are included in them. We have practised following details in a procedural text, identifying which instructions and ideas are the most important and using these to create a drawing. This week, we have been focusing on using the graphics and illustrations in a procedural text to help us understand what we are reading. We have also been practising confirming our thinking by re-reading something we have previously read.

Over the past two weeks in Writing, we have been looking at writing procedural texts - specifically a set of instructions. We have been taking part in language experiences (making fingerprint art and programming BeeBots) and then using our experiences to help us write a set of instructions so that someone else can learn to do those activities. We have been focusing on making sure our instructions are clear, precise and in sequential order so people can follow them easily. We are looking forward to putting our steps to the test this afternoon by using the BeeBots to try out each other’s instructions!

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning all about mapping and angles! We have been looking at lots of different examples of maps, examining them and learning about the different components they have that help us to understand the information they hold. Some of these include grid references, legends, compasses and keys.

We have also been learning about right angles - even creating our own Angle Monsters to help us identify right angles in our school environment.

We are putting all of our new knowledge to use this week by designing and mapping out our ideal Year 3 Common Room. We can’t wait to see everyone’s different designs!

Inquiry

We have continued our learning about our Solar System by applying our knowledge through the construction of dioramas. Each Year 3 student has used a box, paint, glitter and paper to begin making their models of our Solar System, trying to make each planet look as realistic as possible. We look forward to putting the finishing touches on our models and sharing them with our school community in the coming weeks.
