Grade 2 News

As we reach the midpoint of this term, we're really proud of the progress our students have made. It's been a term full of learning, growth, and excitement, and we're excited to see how everything they've experienced so far will continue to help them in the weeks ahead.
English This term, we’ve been having fun exploring alternative spellings for different graphemes, including w and wh, v and ve, as well as rr, wr, and r. In morphology, we've been diving into new suffixes like -ion and -est. We’ve also been learning about pronouns and how they’re used in different ways, such as replacing nouns or acting as adjectives. In Story Champs, we continue to practise retelling nonfiction texts by identifying the main idea and key details. And excitingly, we’re starting to draft our own nonfiction texts, using the knowledge we've gained from our literature and knowledge topics we've studied so far. It’s been a busy, creative term full of learning! Looking ahead in English, we will be learning:
- The sounds /tch/ and /e/
- Using commas in a list
- Continuing to plan and draft non fiction texts
MathematicsThe Year 2 students have been exploring division, focusing on two key concepts: grouping division and sharing division. Grouping division is when we know the number in each group, while sharing division is when we know the number of groups. As part of our learning, we've also been using arrays to solve division problems and discussing what to do when there are remainders. We've looked at how repeated subtraction connects to division and how it can be used to represent grouping division. Additionally, we've practised partitioning as a strategy to solve division problems.
Looking ahead, in Maths, we will be learning:
- Fractions of length and collections.(half, quarter and an eighth)
- Interpreting graphs and data
Literature/Knowledge UnitWe have been diving into a wonderful text called Go Go and the Silver Shoes, which has provided us with many exciting learning opportunities. Through this story, we have explored how to create and use compound sentences by incorporating conjunctions such as "and," "but," and "because." This has helped us improve our sentence structure and communication skills.
Additionally, we’ve focused on expanding our vocabulary by examining four key words from the text: suggestion, announcement, shimmer, and absolutely. We’ve explored the meanings of these words in depth, discussing their definitions, and using them in sentences to demonstrate our understanding. This has not only enriched our vocabulary but also helped us connect new words to the context of the story and use them effectively in our own writing and speech.
Looking ahead, in Literature/Knowledge, we will be learning:
- Culture of Japan
Special Events
Over the last few weeks, students have participated in some fun events.
Colour Run
We had an amazing time at the Colour Run, dashing through clouds of bright colours and celebrating a day full of fun and energy! It was a blast getting covered in rainbow hues while enjoying the excitement with friends. We finished off the day with covering some of our teachers in slime!
Lego Discovery Excursion:
Our trip to the LEGO Discovery Centre was an unforgettable adventure! We had an absolute blast building, creating, and exploring the amazing LEGO displays and interactive activities. We made our own car and launched it, experienced the thrill of a fun ride, and even watched an exciting 4D movie that had us laughing and getting wet! Of course, we spent plenty of time playing with countless LEGO bricks, letting our imaginations run wild. It was truly a day filled with creativity and excitement!
Police Visit on Road Safety
The police officers who visited us gave us some valuable lessons on cyber and road safety. We learned important tips for crossing the street, biking safely, and staying aware of our surroundings, as well as how to protect ourselves online by using strong passwords and being cautious about sharing personal information.
