STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. These subject areas will be explored throughout the school year, with a change of focus in each term. STEM learning involves scientific and technological understanding, as well as practising hands-on skills through experimentation and design.

Foundation students are participating in guided investigations, learning about how water behaves. They have observed water clinging to itself on a surface and have learned that materials are waterproof or absorbent. They completed a learning task in week 4, which is now available to view on Compass.

Students this week are exploring floating and sinking, and were challenged to build a boat out of foil than can hold 15 marbles!

Grade 1 and grade 2 students are learning about forces - that objects can only move when a force is applied. Students learned about twist forces and made spinners, which they observed as they applied different sized forces and used on different surfaces.

Students will be completing a design project where they use their new knowledge of forces to design a toy and build a prototype using reclaimed materials Families can help their students by donating small cardboard boxes (e.g. cereal boxes), milk bottle lids, paper towel rolls, plastics containers (e.g. yoghurt tubs). Could any donations please be cleaned. We cannot accept egg cartons or toilet paper tubes.

Grade 3/4 & 4/5 students are continuing their learning about living things. They are learning about food chains and food webs, and the impact that removal or addition of a living thing can have. There is a lot of new vocabulary to learn, but students have been very interested to learn ‘what eats what’.  They will soon be completing their learning tasks.

Grade 5/6 students have begun their design technology unit of food and fibre production. Students have learned about the production and supply process of modern products, using a Minecraft World from the Education library, and then researching a specific product in preparation for their upcoming learning task.
