As we approach the holiday season, the English team extends warm wishes for a happy and safe break.
For our senior students, we wish to underscore the importance of utilizing the summer holidays wisely. It is our expectation that you read your assigned English texts before the commencement of the 2024 school year. Unlike close passage analysis readings, these texts will not be covered extensively during lessons, and finding time to catch up once the school year begins can be challenging.
Reading during the break is not merely a task; it is an investment in your academic success. Reading for at least 20 minutes a day has the following benefits:
Cognitive Growth: Engaging with literature exercises your mind, stimulating critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This process helps in developing a broader vocabulary, a keener sense of comprehension and an enhanced ability to analyse complex ideas.
Language Proficiency: Regular reading enhances language proficiency, enriching both written and verbal communication skills. This, in turn, contributes significantly to overall academic performance.
Empathy and Understanding: Through the diverse characters and perspectives presented in literature, reading fosters empathy and understanding. This, in turn, cultivates emotional intelligence—a skill crucial for navigating both academic and real-world challenges.
To our students in Years 7-9, we extend a similar invitation. Consider adopting a proactive approach to your holiday reading, laying the groundwork for a successful return to school.
May your holidays be filled with joy, relaxation and the enchantment of a good book.
BARBIE!
Students have been exploring the depiction of Barbie over the years. Students used their numeracy skills in English to work out what Barbie would look like if she were represented as a fully grown human. As part of their learning, students had to convert measurements from imperial to metric and draw her measurements. Students were very surprised to learn that Barbie wouldn’t be able to stand if she were a real person. In fact, Barbie as a real person would be anatomically impossible and she’d have to walk on all fours!
