Catholic Identity and Mission

Recently some of our new student leaders attended a Student Leadership Gathering at Phillip Island, run by Marist Schools Australia. When a student of Marist-Sion College takes on a leadership role in the school – irrespective of the position –they are considered to be a leader; a leader in a Catholic context. This requires the students to receive formation in relation to their own understanding and acknowledgment of their personal faith, as well as how the Catholic Identity of Marist-Sion College is lived in our school community.
For those of our leaders who are not Catholic, this can be new learning and a new understanding of leadership. They can be called to speak at Liturgies and at Masses, represent our College amongst other leaders of DOSCEL Schools, or attend events with partner schools from the Marist or Sion charisms. At each opportunity, the leaders are required to reflect and respond. They are asked to view the world through a distinctly Catholic lens – which does not require them to be Catholic, but to consider what makes a Catholic school different and what the motivation is for the way we conduct ourselves and what we promote.
It is a huge privilege to be a Leader at Marist-Sion College and we will continue to dialogue with our students about the role they play in the Catholic identity of our school.
We urge all families to make a donation to our Christmas Appeal, which supports the work of Vinnies and BawBaw Food Relief. In the Spirit of Christmas and aligned with our belief that we are all responsible to ensure that no one goes without, we ask that you share what you have to help bring peace to those in our community who need to be shown some love this Christmas. Students are asked to place their donations in one of the three baskets in the House groups – food, toiletries or a gift. Gifts can also be placed under the Lourdes Christmas Tree in the College Reception.
