Level 1

Level 1 – Week 9 Term 4

We have had a busy few weeks in Level 1!  A favourite from the past few weeks was our excursion to Como House. The students got to explore an old, historical mansion which belonged to the Armytage family in 1847. Students participated in activities such as a mansion tour, servants work, old fashioned games and a mystery ‘who dunnit’ hunt. The students had a wonderful time and there were lots of stories shared over the course of the 2 days.

Literacy

In recent weeks, the students have been learning how to summarise a book using a strategy called the ‘SWBST’ strategy (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then). The students have enjoyed reading fiction books and learning how to share only a snippet of the book. In Writing, we have been exploring procedural writing. Last week, the students were able to conduct a science experiment and wrote a procedure to match. We made galaxy milk and it was a hit! The students had a great time and enjoyed following their procedures to perform the experiment. If you have some spare time at home, maybe ask your child to show you or they can write you a procedure for how to make it and you can make it at home together!

Numeracy

In the past 2 weeks, Level 1s have been exploring measurement. The children have explored different kinds of measurement, such as length, width, mass and capacity. Last week we looked at what capacity is, and the students were able to experiment with different containers to determine its capacity. If you would like to promote Mathematics in your home, you could get your child to measure things around the house using uniform, informal objects like paper clips or blocks. You could also get them to measure the weight of an item using grams or kilograms, or measuring the capacity of a container using millilitres or litres.
